Sex and the City Meets Another Career Women

Posted: June 8, 2008, 11:23 PM by Leslie Grossman

I was delighted with different viewpoints many of you shared in the Sex & the City Blog! I think this is the biggest exchange of blog entries we've had yet!! By the way, to those of you who disagreed with my blog, I say "thank you." I welcome your disagreement! Please don't judge me or the WLE based on what I wrote! I certainly don't judge you. WLE is an "exchange" of ideas, knowledge, opinions, expertise, support etc....and isn't that what blogging is all about? Let's be open to each other opinions. After all, that's all they are!

Tonight, I feel it's my responsibility to write about another career woman... one who has achieved a high level of significance -- Senator Hillary Clinton. She is certainly not glamourous like Carrie Bradshaw and company.... She's more like us - hard-working, driven and passionate about what she believes in. Congratulations, Hillary! You have made millions of women proud! No matter whether or not you were a Hillary Clinton supporter, there are some things that no one can deny. We can definitely confidently tell our daughters and grand daughters that a woman can be President of the U.S. due to her campaign. No other woman in history has come so close to being President. No matter how the media harassed her and pressured her to drop out of the race, she refused to be a "good girl" and do what she was told.

We now all know that sexism in the media is alive and well. Pundit after pundit behaved in ways that were crude, rude, etc. Did you see the video montage on "The Daily Show" Thursday night? If sexism is alive in the media -- it's alive in business, too!! No matter what, we can't seem to get more than a handful of women CEOs of Fortune 100 companies or 2 handfuls of women on major corporate boards. The number hasn't changed in years! Is this sexism? I don't know for sure, but we have our work cut out for us! So let's all be proud of Senator Clinton and all the women that have taken and will take a stand as political candidates and as leaders in business.

It's a tough world out there and women need to acknowledge the successes of women like Senator Clinton. Just like we all may not agree on Sex and the City, we may not all agree on politics. It's my personal hope that we can all agree to encourage women to stand strong in the face of detractors and stay the course in what they believe! It was Anita Roddick who said, "Be Courageous. It's one of the only places left uncrowded."

Best always,
Leslie Grossman

Regardless of your political preference, it cannot be disputed that this presidential election has been groundbreaking for women and minorities. Young women have witnessed that a strong, educated, and determined woman is a viable candidate. This fact will have positive outcomes for years to come … in politics and in business!

We will have evolved into a great people and country when we respect people who stand for integrity, character, truth, and justice regardless of their gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or age.  I noted that the media continue to mention age as if anyone over 50 should call it a day and put out the lights by 9:00. vs. respecting the integrity,  knowledge, experience, and wisdom that one gains with age so that they are ready to lead a great nation with a sound mind even into battle or out of battle with the world while protecting our citizens. Many foreigners still honor their parents and seek the advice of mature persons because they're inexperienced in many matters which is the wise thing to do, not that youthful energy and ideas aren't important, but experience is an invaluable resource for leading others into a life of hell or freedom.

I haven't seen the movie yet.  I have been too busy working.  But I am going to see it this weekend.  I loved the series, and it if it as much fun as that, then I celebrate it.  I don't think young girls should see this movie, or have watched the series (lets face it, lots have HBO in their homes, parents can't watch all the time.) If they do watch I just hope for there sake that parents are their to guide them.

I Best like the comments about Hillary Clinton.  WOW !  She is doing so much for women, just like Susan B. Anthony, maybe we can get Hillary on our dollar some day. ( not that it is worth much today)  Movies that are fun and silly mindless entertainment are a great stress reliever from today's worries.  Although here in Texas you may have to save for a week for gas money to drive to the theater !

What a gracious response, Leslie! Well done. Thank you for bringing Hillary Clinton's achievements for women into the discussion. Many people really dislike her or don't agree with her views, but you can't help but be disappointed that her dedication to women's issues probably won't be a driving force in the White House, at least not for the next four years. Barack Obama may be a good candidate, but he'll never match Senator Clinton's passionate desire and untiring work to change our government based on what children and families really need.

I was so happy to see Hilliary getting more of the recognition she deserves.  Her tenacity and courage were exemplary to women of every age.  This is ONE example of what Hillary has done for me personally.  As I was headed to the polls during the primarys my 8 yr old daughter asked me for whom I was voting.  When I told her Hillary Clinton, she seemed so disappointed.  I was a bit taken back.  Then she said, "but mommy, I want to be the first women President!"  I say no more!

I love your blog idea by the way.  We should be embrassing diverse opinions and challenging each others thinking.  It makes us all stronger in the end.

Hi Leslie,

I totally agree that we MUST acknowledge the successes of the Hillary campaign. This has been such an amazing year to me personally because my 3 daughters were able to see a woman run for President. I know they will see a woman president in their lifetime too. Hillary put "18 million cracks in the glass ceiling" and I am grateful she did!
