I am watching the evening major network news coverage of the terrible crisis resulting from the earthquake in Haiti. It's a tragedy. And we must not shy away from watching it. The recession is nothing compared to the images you will see.
Aid is coming in droves...especially from America. It is hopeful. But we need the Star Trek transporter to get what Haiti needs as fast as it is needed. A crisis of this proportion, with no clean water, no power, road blocks, destroyed port, limited runways and devastation, is so painful to watch. While America, the U.S. military, relief organizations and other countries are moving as fast as they can...the logistics of saving people from the crushed buildings, getting the medical, food and supplies to the survivors that need it the most are extremely painstaking.
I am proud of the leadership America is taking to move faster and quicker with the resources needed. It appears much faster and more organized than we did when Katrina hit our own country. I am also proud to see Katy Couric (CBS), Diane Sawyer (ABC) and Ann Curry (NBC) - women broadcasters taking the lead in reporting live on the scene in Haiti. For the first time, these stories are being told through women's eyes. Looking at Diane Sawyer frazzled, upset, and close to tears made me realize the difference between women and men in reporting tragedy. She allowed herself to feel the pain of the people. And we could see it in her eyes and on her face.
It made me want to jump on a plane and help the rescue efforts. But, of course, I know that I would be of little help right now by being there. However, we all can help by sending money FAST to the organizations who have trained doctors, relief workers and project managers that are trained for disasters. So let's all help Haiti by giving. Two relief organizations at the forefront in Haiti right now are:
Doctors Without Borders, 888-392-0392
American Red Cross, 800-733-2767
Join Andrea and I in donating what you can (even $10 makes a difference) to these organizations or the many others that
are working in Haiti.
Together we can make a huge difference!
Best

If you text the word Haiti to 90999 - they will text back to ensure you want to make a $10 donation to Am Red Cross; you text back "yes" and voila, you're done. I did it today.
