Lisa Bloom, author of Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed Down World, is an award--winning journalist, legal analyst, trial attorney, and the daughter of renowned women's rights attorney, Gloria Allred. A daily fixture on American television for the last decade, Bloom is currently the CBS News legal analyst, appearing frequently on The Early Show and CBS Evening News with Katie Couric, as well as the legal analyst for The Dr. Phil Show. Bloom appears regularly on CNN and HLN prime time shows such as Issues With Jane Velez--Mitchell, The Joy Behar Show, Anderson Cooper 360, and The Situation Room. Carolyn Gable, CEO

Carolyn Gable’s creativity and enthusiasm have resulted in New Age Transportation, Distribution & Warehousing Inc. Generating revenue in excess of $30 million this year, and the recipient of numerous awards for both her business acumen and charitable work, most entrepreneurs would be satisfied by winning the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award (2002). Not Carolyn. Her true passion is unlocking the potential in individuals, inspiring her employees and everyone that crosses her path to achieve personal and professional success.

It all started when she was a single mother of seven. After graduating high school, she wandered as a beautician for a year until she settled as a waitress.

As a waitress for over a decade she honed her communication and inter-personal skills, yet she knew something greater was meant for her. Like many of us, she needed a little push. Forced to make ends meet, Carolyn walked into an employment office and got a job as a customer service representative at a freight company. After a year of dedicating herself to learning the industry, she was promoted to a sales position. A few years later, the freight industry became deregulated, and Carolyn was quick to realize an opportunity. Taking a risk, she started her own company in 1989. The rest is history.

The author of Everything I Know as a CEO I Learned as a Waitress, Carolyn outlines her principles for success - which can be applied within business and in one's own personal life. Understanding firsthand how the financial hurdles of a single parent juggling working and raising a family and how overbearing the can be, . Carolyn also started a foundation, Expect A Miracle, which provides relief from some of the daily challenges, allowing mothers to shift more of their energy towards the miracles in their own lives.

Patricia Harris, Global Chief Diversity Officer
McDonald's Corporation

 

Pat is responsible for the development and implementation of diversity strategies throughout McDonald’s Corporation including the 31,489 restaurants in 118 countries. She began her career with McDonald’s over 30 years ago as an administrative assistant in the Corporate Legal department. Harris was quickly promoted to several positions within the Human Resources department leading to her current global leadership role.

Under her leadership, McDonald’s has been widely recognized for it’s commitment to inclusion and diversity. This recognition includes, Fortune Magazine’s “Top 50 Places for Minorities to Work”, Black Enterprise Magazine’s “Top 40 Companies for Diversity”, Latina Style Magazine’s “Best Companies for Latinas”, Asian Enterprise Magazine’s
”Top 25 Companies for Asians,” and the “Disability Diversity Award” by Worklife Matters magazine.

Harris is considered an expert in the field of diversity and holds several leadership positions in many national organizations. Pat is a founder and member of the Women’s Foodservice forum, founder and past chair of the MultiCultural Foodservice & Hospitality Alliance, and past President of the Board of Directors for the Breast Cancer Network of Strength (formerly Y-Me National Breast Cancer Organization).

Pat continues her work with non-profit organizations through her work with the Women’s Leadership Board at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, and the Roosevelt University Board of Trustees. Pat was awarded an Honorary PhD from South Carolina State University.

Pat has been featured in several national and local publications including Black Enterprise, Essence magazine, The Chicago Tribune, Today’s Chicago Woman and Diversity Woman magazine. Pat was named one of the “Top 10 Diversity Champions in the Country” by Working Mother magazine, she was named “Woman of the Year” by the Roundtable for Women in Foodservice, received the “Harold Washington Professional Achievement Award” from the Roosevelt University Alumni Association, and received the Eagle award from the International Franchise Association.

Pat recently documented her experience within McDonald’s in her book, None of us is as good as all of us: How McDonald’s prospers by embracing inclusion and diversity.

Pat received her Bachelor’s Degree in Public Administration and Personnel Administration from Roosevelt University in Chicago. Harris resides in Chicago, Illinois and has one son and granddaughter.

Laurel Touby, Founder

Laurel Touby is the founder of mediabistro.com, a website that has revolutionized the way people in the media industry do business, connect and communicate. Before Friendster.com, MySpace, Facebook or HuffingtonPost, there was mediabistro, a site devoted to community building, social networking and career improvement for the millions of professionals working in journalism, publishing, advertising, marketing, design and other media-related specialties.

Laurel graduated from Smith College with a degree in economics and soon after landed her first job at a large New York City ad agency. She then went on to a successful career as a magazine writer and editor, first on staff, then as a freelancer. But, the freelance lifestyle meant that Laurel spent much of her time working from home alone.

In 1994, Laurel and another freelancer decided to host a cocktail party in order to meet new people. Thus began a series of “media salons,” which ultimately led to the founding of Mediabistro. The original gatherings started out small. Once a month, a dozen or so writers and editors met up at a local bar.

But, by 1996, Laurel’s guest list numbered in the thousands. That year, she took the party online by launching a web site with a gossipy bulletin board, insider job listings and user-generated event listing pages. She wrote a business plan and successfully closed a $1 million round of funding in 2000. Laurel then sold mediabistro in 2007 for $23 mm to Jupitermedia (now known as WebMediaBrands). More than 1,000,000 media professionals worldwide have registered on the site. Users subscribe to mediabistro’s many services, which include educational seminars, conferences, events, forums, and industry-specific blogs, such as the popular TVNewser.

The Manhattan Chamber of Commerce honored Laurel with the "Entrepreneur of the Year Award" in 2007 and Smith College awarded her The Smith College Medal in 2010.

Married to journalist Jon Fine, Laurel currently consults for mediabistro.com and other startup companies; she recently joined the Media Task Force of the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum.

Frieda Rapoport Caplan, Founder & Chairman of the Board
Frieda’s, Inc.

 

Frieda Caplan, a native of Los Angeles and a UCLA graduate, is recognized as one of the nation’s most successful female entrepreneurs. In 1962, as the owner of a tiny new produce company, she needed an entrance sign in a hurry. The painter had only one color of paint – purple. However, Caplan embraced the challenge and used the distinctive color to identify Frieda’s Finest/Produce Specialties, Inc. as the source for specialty produce across the country. Purple has since become the company’s signature color, instantly recognized along with its familiar heart-shaped logo. The company’s name was later simplified in 1990 to Frieda’s, Inc.

In April 2008, Frieda’s Inc. celebrated 46 fruitful years in business as the first woman-owned and operated wholesale produce company in the United States – some say … in the world. (Caplan’s daughters Karen and Jackie bought the company in 1990.)

Caplan began her produce career in 1956 as a bookkeeper in a produce business managed by her husband’s aunt and uncle. She soon worked her way “downstairs” and tried her hand at pushing California brown mushrooms – a specialty item at that time. She was an instant success! Inspired by the excitement of selling, Caplan opened her own company in 1962 with mushrooms as the premier item.

Caplan’s marketing abilities were recognized worldwide after her success in introducing and promoting the Kiwifruit, earning her the title, “Queen of Kiwi.” It all began when a retailer asked Caplan if she knew of Chinese Gooseberries. Her interest was piqued, and she promised to investigate. Two months later she discovered the fruit in New Zealand, and at the suggestion of a customs agent, renamed it after the country’s famous fuzzy bird, the Kiwi. By the early 1970s, New Zealand Kiwifruit was catching on. Caplan soon convinced California growers to plant the fruit, and a new global economy was born. Soon California had more than 700 Kiwifruit growers.

Caplan’s influence extends beyond brown mushrooms and Kiwifruit, though. In 1972, Frieda was credited with being “the biggest influence in the produce industry over the last 25 years,” by Marvin Cross, then Vice President of The National Tea Company of Chicago. Caplan is also remembered by many from her 1975 role as ABC-TV’s Green Grocer on Chanel 7 Eyewitness News in Los Angeles.

Today the “little” company that Caplan began distributes more than 600 unusual produce and specialty gourmet items to grocery stores and foodservice distributors throughout North America. An ability to create consumer demand for unusual foods helped Caplan and her daughters make success stories out of items like Kiwifruit, Spaghetti Squash, Alfalfa Sprouts, Jicama, Shallots, Sugar Snap Peas™, Hothouse Cucumbers, Donut® Peaches, Habanero Chiles and even Kiwanos®.

Considered by many as a pioneer in the male-dominated produce industry, Caplan has received numerous awards and honors for her achievements. In 1986, Caplan was the first recipient of the Harriet Alger Award from Working Woman magazine for being a remarkable entrepreneurial role model for women. The January 1, 1990 edition of The Los Angeles Times named Caplan one of 12 Southern California business personalities who shaped the course of American business in the 1980s (also included were Michael Eisner and Jane Fonda).

In 1986, Caplan, who daily works side-by-side with her two daughters, elected to become Chairman of the Board, while her eldest daughter, Karen Caplan, was promoted to President and CEO. Caplan’s younger daughter, Jackie Caplan Wiggins, who joined Frieda’s in 1983, serves as Vice President and Business Development Manager. In 1996, the Caplan family, including daughters Karen and Jackie, received the BUDDY (Bringing Up Daughters Differently) Award from the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund.

When not talking on the phone about what’s hot and what’s new in produce, Caplan is involved in a variety of community organizations. She and her late husband Al were founding members of the Temple Beth David of Orange County. Caplan was also a member on the Board of Trustees of the Westerly School in Long Beach, which her four grandchildren attended.

Caplan has been an active member of the Los Angeles chapter of the International Women’s Forum, the University of California-Riverside Agriculture Advisory Board, and serves on the Board of Directors of Women Against Gun Violence. Caplan also served a 6-year term on the University of California’s Presidential Advisory Commission on Agriculture and Natural Resources.


A much sought-after speaker, Caplan has addressed numerous industry and business events, including the 1992 International Conference of New Crops at Israel’s Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. In 1995, she was the keynote speaker at the Third National Symposium on New Crops sponsored by Purdue University.

In 2005, Caplan was “stunned” to receive the CEO/Business Owner of the Year Award from the Los Angeles Business Journal. This was a surprise because the company had moved to Orange County in 1994, and Caplan was no longer CEO!

Of all the media attention Caplan and her company have received over the years, Inc. Magazine may have captured Frieda’s best when Erik Larsen wrote in 1989: “[Caplan] listened one day when a Safeway produce buyer paid her a visit. That moment changed American cuisine.”

Caplan celebrated her 85th birthday in August, and continues to work Monday through Friday -- and sometimes Saturdays -- at the company's Los Alamitos, Calif. headquarters, while her daughters run the business and daily operations.

Kathy Cloninger, CEO
Girl Scouts of the USA

 

Kathy Cloninger is the Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA), the premier leadership development organization for girls. She is a recognized expert on, and advocate for girls' and women's issues, leading the organization to fulfill a more comprehensive mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

Now in its 95th year, GSUSA serves 2.8 million girl members and nearly a million adult volunteers by providing girl-centric programs in science, technology, business and financial literacy, health and safety, and outdoor and environmental awareness. The activities are designed to provide fun and friendship opportunities, and to foster the development of self-esteem in girls of every race, faith, economic status, geographic origin and physical stature. GSUSA is the largest member organization of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, which reaches 10 million girls in 144 member countries.

On her arrival at Girl Scout headquarters in late 2003, Cloninger launched a sweeping transformation of the entire Girl Scout Movement to increase its compelling, contemporary appeal and relevance to 21st-century girls, resulting in the new Girl Scout business strategy that:

• Focuses the Girl Scout program on leadership development and provable outcomes that benefit girls, families and communities;
• Overhauls outdated volunteer systems and widens the volunteer base;
• Revitalizes the Girl Scout brand as the premier leadership experience for girls;
• Builds a culture of philanthropy and models how to raise funds for girls;
• Streamlines corporate structure and governance, and realigns Girl Scout councils into high-capacity, high-performance councils that more effectively deliver the Girl Scout program;
• Champions diversity and pluralism.

Cloninger's 23 years in Girl Scouting include service as CEO with Girl Scout councils in Tennessee, Texas and Colorado; as national management consultant for GSUSA; and as participants with groundbreaking task groups strategizing on girls' well-being. She was an executive grant-maker at the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, CEO of two YWCA branches in Texas, and a career development consultant.

Cloninger serves on the national boards of American Humanics and the National Assembly of Human Services, and on advisory boards for America's Promise, See Jane, and the National Association of Corporate Boards. She is a founder of Tennessee's Association of Nonprofit Executives. She has received numerous awards, including Nonprofit CEO of the Year 2000 from the Center for Nonprofit Management, and the NCCJ Human Relations Award.

A native of Dallas, Texas, Cloninger got her start as a Girl Scout in her mother's troop. She earned an M.S. in counseling and business management from East Texas State University.

She and her husband, Michael, favor country music, and have hosted nearly 350 world-class songwriter concerts at their homes in Nashville and New York.

Tracey Doi is group vice president and chief financial officer (CFO) of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc.

Doi is responsible for the business planning, corporate finance, tax, accounting, procurement, real estate and facilities, safety and administration functions for the U.S. sales and marketing operations for Toyota, Lexus and Scion.

With a career that spans more than 20 years in finance and accounting, Doi joined Toyota in 2000 as vice president, corporate controller and was appointed to CFO in 2003. Prior to that, she held the position of director of finance for AT&T Wireless in Los Angeles, controller for L.A. Cellular Telephone Company, and vice president and controller for L.A. Gear, Inc.

Doi earned her bachelor’s degree in business economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and her Certified Public Accountant designation while at Arthur Andersen & Co.

Doi was named Automotive Woman of the Year in 2007 by Manheim, and was awarded 2006 Interfaith Leadership Tribute by His Eminence Cardinal Mahony. In addition, Automotive News recognized Doi as one of the 100 leading women in the automotive industry in 2005. Doi serves on the board of directors for the March of Dimes, California chapter, the board of governors for the Japanese American National Museum, and the board of directors for the Japan America Society. She is a member of the CFO Executive Board, the Organization of Women Executives, and the corporate advisor for the Toyota Organization for the Development of LatinOs (TODOS) business partnering group.

Doi is married and enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.

Helen Greiner is chairman and co-founder of iRobot (Nasdaq: IRBT). Greiner’s forward-looking instincts have transformed the Massachusetts Institute of Technology spin-off into a $249 million business and a global leader of practical robots. Under her leadership, iRobot is at the forefront of the growing robot industry, delivering home and government robots that are making a difference. Today, more than 2 million iRobot® Roomba® vacuum cleaning robots – the world’s first affordable home robot – have been sold around the globe. More than 1,500 iRobot® PackBot® tactical mobile robots have been delivered to military and civil defense forces worldwide, performing thousands of dangerous missions while keeping personnel out of harm’s way. Greiner’s visionary contributions in technology innovation and business leadership have been recognized with numerous professional awards. She has been named one of America’s Best Leaders by the Kennedy School at Harvard University in conjunction with U.S. News & World Report and has been honored with the Pioneer Award from the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI). Greiner sits on the computer science advisory board of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, the board of trustees of the Boston Museum of Science and the board of directors of the National Defense Industrial Association (NDIA). Sung-Joo Kim is the Founder of Sungjoo Group, which consists of Sungjoo International Ltd. (SJI), Sungjoo Merchandising Inc. (SMI) and Sungjoo Design Tech & Distribution Inc. (SDD). She is also Chairperson of MCM Group/MCM Products AG./MCM Lederwaren GmbH, for the global business.

Ms. Kim has been involved in the fashion industry for more than 20 years, beginning her career at Bloomingdale’s in 1985 under the direct supervision of Mr. Marvin Traub, the legendary retailer and ex-Chairman of Bloomingdale’s. Since 1990, Sungjoo Group has successfully launched several globally renowned brands and retailing operation such as Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Sonia Rykiel and Marks & Spencer as an exclusive franchisee, running more than 100 stores in Korea. The company has also acquired MCM’s global business, distributing to more than 150 retailers in 40 countries worldwide. The estimated gross annual sales of the group in 2007 are approximately 200 Million USD.

Ms. Kim studied at Yonsei University, Korea (BA in Theology/Sociology), Amherst College, USA (BA in Sociology), London School of Economics, UK (MSc in International Relations) and Harvard University, USA (MTS in Business Ethics & Economics). She was also awarded an Honorary Doctorate Degree (in Humane Letters) by Amherst College, USA.

As one of the most celebrated businesswomen in Asia, Ms. Kim has been featured in numerous publications and media broadcasts including Forbes, Asiaweek, CNN, CNBC and the BBC. Dr. Geraldine Knatz, Executive Director

As executive director of the Port of Los Angeles, Geraldine Knatz, Ph.D. oversees the daily operations and internal management of the nation’s number one containerport. After an exhaustive national search, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa nominated Dr. Knatz for the position in late 2005. In January 2006, she became the first female executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.

Moving the Port of Los Angeles forward with an agenda that focuses on responsible Port growth and environmental leadership is an aggressive goal that Dr. Knatz has tackled from day one. Reducing port emissions, eliminating health risks and expanding capital development programs to accommodate the Port’s future growth as a premiere Pacific gateway and national economic engine are top priorities at the Port under the leadership of Dr. Knatz.

A key to accomplishing these goals is the landmark San Pedro Bay Ports Clean Air Action Plan, approved in November 2006 by the Los Angeles and Long Beach Harbor Commissions. The Clean Air Action Plan provides a comprehensive strategy for reducing air emissions from port operations by nearly 50 percent over a period of five years. Dr. Knatz was instrumental in the creation and implementation of the Clean Air Action Plan. Her efforts facilitated the first joint meeting of the leaders of the two ports since the 1920s and the first ever public meeting of the two Port Boards on the day the Plan was approved in November.

Ellyn A. McColgan is President and Chief Operating Officer of the Global Wealth Management Group (GWMG), one of Morgan Stanley’s three main business groups, and serves as a member of the Morgan Stanley Management Committee.

One of the largest businesses of its kind in the world with over $700 billion in client assets, GWMG provides a range of wealth management products and services to individuals, businesses and institutions. These include brokerage and investment advisory services, financial and wealth planning, credit and lending, banking and cash management, annuities and insurance, retirement and trust.

Approximately 8,000 financial advisors and investment representatives serve clients through a network of nearly 500 offices worldwide. Within this network, Private Wealth Management serves ultra-high net worth clients in the Americas, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in April 2008, Ms. McColgan served as president of Distribution and Operations for Fidelity Investments, one of the world’s largest financial services providers. Areas reporting to her included the brokerage company, institutional services, life insurance and new business development.

She joined Fidelity Investments in 1990, and held a succession of senior management positions within the firm’s 401(k) client services division, the 403(b) business for not-for-profit institutions, the intermediary business that distributed Fidelity funds through banks, broker/dealers and insurance firms, and the brokerage company. During Ms. McColgan’s tenure, the brokerage business achieved dramatic growth, with client assets under administration increasing by more than $1 trillion.

She began her financial services career in 1983 at Shearson Lehman Brothers, and held a succession of positions there and at the Bank of New England.

Ms. McColgan received a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology from Montclair State University in New Jersey, an MBA from Harvard Business School, and an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the F.W. Olin Graduate School of Business at Babson College.

Ms. McColgan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (co-chair in 2007), the financial industry’s primary U.S. based trade organization. She also serves as a trustee of the Museum of Fine Arts of Boston, and as a member of the President’s Council of Massachusetts General Hospital. Dr. Sarah Weddington
Attorney, Legislator, Presidential Advisor, Professor, and Leadership Expert

 

Dr. Sarah Weddington lives a life of leadership and shares her expertise and insights with others. She is a nationally known attorney and spokesperson on leadership and public issues, and her experience and charisma make her a highly sought after speaker on the development of leadership skills.

Dr. Weddington is particularly well-known for her work on issues affecting women through her many roles which include attorney, legislator, Presidential advisor, professor, and expert called upon by the national media and institutions of higher learning.

In her first book, A Question of Choice, Dr. Weddington detailed the landmark Roe v. Wade case, which she successfully argued as a young attorney before the US Supreme Court in 1973. She is believed to be the youngest person ever to win a case before the US Supreme Court. Currently Dr. Weddington is working on a book on the topic of leadership and self-renewal.

She is a proven leader in government at the state and national levels. In 1973, she became the first woman from Austin to serve in the 150-member Texas House of Representatives, serving for three terms. In 1977, she was the first woman ever to hold the title of General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Agriculture where Dr. Weddington supervised more than 200 lawyers. From 1978 to 1981, she served as Assistant to President Jimmy Carter, directing the Administration's work on women's issues and leadership outreach. From 1983 to 1985, she was the first female director of the Texas Office of State-Federal Relations.

Dr. Weddington is currently an adjunct professor at the University of Texas at Austin, where she is shaping a new generation of leaders through her classes "Gender-Based Discrimination" and "Leadership in America.” She started teaching there in l986.

Dr. Weddington writes and travels extensively, speaking on the development of leadership skills.

Rebecca Boenigk, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Neutral Posture, Inc., heads up the company that became a driving force in the ergonomic seating industry and the only woman-owned chair manufacturer in the United States.

In 1989, when ergonomics was a relatively new applied science and virtually unheard of, Rebecca and her mother, Jaye with $50K in startup capital began manufacturing chairs based on neutral posture concepts developed by her inventor/engineering father, Dr. Jerome Congleton in Rebecca’s garage.

Together Rebecca and Jaye took Neutral Posture from a start-up company to a publicly held company in nine years. In 1997 Neutral Posture, Inc. completed an initial public offering becoming the first and only certified women-owned business to be traded on the NASDAQ followed four years later by a joint family and management buyout of public shareholders making Neutral Posture a privately held company again. The commitment of Neutral Posture to manufacture truly ergonomic chairs has led to its phenomenal growth resulting in net sales for fiscal year 2006 in excess of $22 million and growth in excess of 16%.

Rebecca was appointed by Hector Barreto to serve on the National Women’s Business Council, which serves as advisors to the President, Congress and U.S. SBA. Carleton S. (Carly) Fiorina was president and chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard Company from 1999 to 2005. She served as chairman of the board from 2000 to 2005.

Prior to joining HP, Fiorina spent nearly 20 years at AT&T and Lucent Technologies, where she held a number of senior leadership positions and directed Lucent's initial public offering and subsequent spin-off from AT&T.

Fiorina was named an honorary fellow of the London Business School in July 2001. In 2002, she was honored with the Appeal of Conscience Award, and in 2003 she received the Concern Worldwide "Seeds of Hope" Award in recognition of her worldwide efforts to make global citizenship a priority for business.

The Private Sector Council honored Fiorina with its 2004 Leadership Award for her contributions to improving the business of government. Also in 2004, the White House appointed her to the U.S. Space Commission.

Fiorina has a bachelor's degree in medieval history and philosophy from Stanford University. She holds a master's degree in business administration from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland at College Park, Md., and a master of science degree from MIT's Sloan School.

Soledad O'Brien is an anchor and special correspondent for CNN: Special Investigations Unit, reporting hour-long documentaries throughout the year and filing in-depth series on the most important ongoing and breaking news stories for all major CNN programs.

O'Brien joined CNN in July 2003 as the co-anchor of the network's flagship morning program, American Morning, and distinguished herself by reporting from the scene on the transformational stories that broke on her watch. Her efforts following Hurricane Katrina and the tsunami in Phuket, Thailand, have earned her numerous awards and critical acclaim.

In recent months, O'Brien served as CNN's point person for President George W. Bush's visit to Mexico, delivering a series of eye-opening reports on conditions south of the border that fuel illegal immigration to the United States. She also anchored and reported a highly acclaimed CNN: Special Investigations Unit documentary featuring a never-before-seen look at Martin Luther King Jr.'s private writings, notes and teachings, which represent the foundation of King’s life's work as a preacher and human rights activist; and her ongoing initiative titled "Children of the Storm," which provides video cameras to young Hurricane Katrina survivors so that they can tell their stories of trial and triumph in their own words and images.

O'Brien came to CNN from NBC News where she had anchored the network’s Weekend Today since July 1999. Before Weekend Today, O'Brien anchored MSNBC's award-winning technology program The Site. O'Brien joined NBC News in 1991 and was based in New York as a field producer for Nightly News and Today.

Before her time at NBC, she served three years as a local reporter and bureau chief for the NBC affiliate KRON in San Francisco. She began her career as an associate producer and news writer at the then-NBC affiliate, WBZ-TV in Boston.

Michelle Peluso

Michelle Peluso is not the type of leader who lets someone else reply to email she receives from customers. And she expects this adamant devotion to customer service from everyone on the Travelocity team. So committed is she to ensuring that Travelocity's customers have great travel experiences or "customer championship," as it's known throughout the company, that in 2005 she led the rollout of The Travelocity Guarantee, a one-of-a-kind consumer proposition that puts these principles to the test everyday.

After joining Travelocity following the acquisition of Site59, a company she launched in 2000, she was named president and chief executive officer in December 2003 and has since led Travelocity's turnaround as well as its global expansion into Europe and Asia-Pacific, spearheading the acquisitions of lastminute.com and ZUJI, respectively.

Maria Contreras-Sweet, Managing Partner & Co-Founder

Maria Contreras-Sweet is the Managing Partner and Co-Founder of FORTIUS Holdings, LLC, a private equity fund and commercial real estate development company. The fund has a Latino business focus with investments ranging from $1,000,000 to $10,000,000.

Prior to founding FORTIUS, Ms. Contreras-Sweet was the Secretary of Business, Transportation and Housing Agency for the State of California, managing 42,000 employees and a $14 billion budget. As the Business Secretary, she oversaw the Department of Financial Institutions, the Department of Corporations and the Department of Real Estate. Other areas under her leadership were the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Department of Motor Vehicles and the California Highway Patrol. Known as a strong housing advocate, she led the implementation of Proposition 46, a $2.1 billion housing fund, stimulating the state?s economy. Ms. Contreras-Sweet created the state?s first Department of Managed Health Care to advance and streamline HMO delivery systems. Sherry Lansing, Former President

In 2005, Sherry Lansing founded The Sherry Lansing Foundation to encompass many aspects of her philanthropic work. The primary focus of the foundation is cancer research.

Sherry Lansing served as Chairman of the Motion Picture Group of Paramount Pictures, a unit of the Viacom Entertainment Group, from November 1992 until March 2005. Ms. Lansing was responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's motion picture operations. Under her chairmanship, three of Paramount's pictures won the Academy Award" for Best Picture during a four-year period - "Forrest Gump" (1994), "Braveheart" (1995) and the highest grossing motion picture of all time, "Titanic" (1997).

Prior to becoming Chairman of the Motion Picture Group, Ms. Lansing headed her own production company, Lansing Productions, which produced Paramount Pictures' "Indecent Proposal." Before that, during her partnership with Stanley Jaffe, formed in 1983, Jaffe/Lansing Productions produced a variety of films for Paramount, among them "The Accused," "Black Rain," "Fatal Attraction," "Racing With the Moon" and "School Ties." From 1980 to 1983, Ms. Lansing served as President of Production at 20th Century Fox. She was the first woman to hold that position in the motion picture industry. Prior to joining Fox, Ms. Lansing served as Senior Vice President at Columbia Pictures.

Lansing has received numerous honors, including the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship, the Milestone Award from the Producers Guild of America, the Overcoming Obstacles Achievement Award for Business, the YWCA Silver Achievement Award, the Outstanding Woman in Business Award from the Women's Equity Action League, the Distinguished Community Service Award from Brandeis University, the Alfred P. Sloan, Jr. Memorial Award and an honorary Doctorate in Fine Arts from the American Film Institute. She was also the recipient of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Distinguished Service Award for the Performing Arts and was named the 1996 Pioneer of the Year by the Foundation of the Motion Picture Pioneers. On July 31, 1996, Ms. Lansing's birthday, she became the first woman studio head to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2004, Lansing received the Horatio Alger Humanitarian Award.

Additionally, she serves as the Chair of Stop Cancer, a non-profit philanthropic group she founded in partnership with Dr. Armand Hammer. Lansing is a Regent of the University of California and a member of the American Red Cross Board of Governors. In 2005, Lansing was appointed to the Independent Citizens Oversight Committee of the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The CIRM was established by California's groundbreaking ballot measure, Proposition 71, which provided $3 billion in funding for stem cell research.

After her first year of business, she opened a boutique in Beverly Hills, California in 1999. Women traveled from as far as New Hampshire and purchased up to 20 pairs of shoes before returning home. This inspired Rose to immediately open a second boutique in New York and by 2002, opened a third in San Jose, California. Most recently adding a fourth store at the Forum Shops in Las Vegas.

Formally trained as an orthopedic surgeon, Rose saw patients with many serious foot problems that were caused by fashion footwear, high heels and pointed toes. Being a lover of beautiful footwear, her own feet ached after 14-hour days in shoes with three-inch heels.

With her own appreciation of designer goods, Rose created her collection using the most luxurious materials available and crafted the line to be worn with the finest clothing. The shoes are made by highly skilled artisans in Italy, with almost three hours of hand labor in each pair.

In fall 2003, Rose launched a complete men?s collection that spans from dress to casual. Celebrated by retailers, the men?s collection is carried in select specialty stores and Taryn Rose Boutiques.

Rose has been featured on CNN News Night with Aaron Brown, Oprah, Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer, Discovery Channel?s Berman and Berman, National Public Radio All Things Considered, Fine Living Network?s Radical Sabbatical, Later Today Show and news shows across the country. From November 1992 until January 1996, Maxine was the President of Payless ShoeSource, Inc. Prior to joining Payless, she spent over 19 years in various divisions of The May Department Stores Company in areas including merchandise development, merchandise planning, merchandise research, marketing and product development.

Maxine Clark is one of the true innovators in the retail industry. During her 30-year career, her rare ability to spot emerging retail and merchandising trends and insight into the desires of the American consumer generated growth for retail leaders, including department store, discount and specialty stores. By year end 2006 there will be nearly 300 Build-A-Bear Workshop stores worldwide, including company owned stores in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom and franchised stores in Europe, Asia and Australia. Sheila C. Johnson, CEO of Salamander Hospitality, LLC, and a partner in Lincoln Holdings, LLC, has enjoyed success in many arenas.

Market Salamander, in Middleburg, Virginia, one of the first components in the portfolio of Salamander Hospitality, is a working chefs? market. Future additions include Market Salamander in Palm Beach, Florida, opening fall 2006, and the luxurious Salamander Resort & Spa, currently under development just outside of Middleburg.
Lincoln Holdings owns the Washington Capitals and Washington Mystics and has a minority interest in Washington Sports and Entertainment Limited Partnership, which controls the Washington Wizards, Washington/Baltimore TicketMaster, in-house promoter Musicentre Productions, and the management of the MCI Center and the George Mason University Patriot Center. Johnson is president, managing partner and governor for the Washington Mystics WNBA team.

Ping Fu is Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Geomagic. She co-founded Geomagic and has led its growth from start-up to worldwide leader in the digital shape sampling and processing (DSSP) industry. Geomagic has attracted more than $8 million in capital from private and institutional investors, and won millions of dollars in research innovation grants from NSF and NIST. The company has been profitable since 2002, and increased its revenue by 381 percent during the last five years.

Before starting Geomagic, Ms. Fu was Director of Visualization at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, where she initiated and managed the NCSA Mosaic software project that led to Netscape and Internet Explorer. Halting more than a decade of decline, she guided the creation of a $12 million technological platform that transformed the company into a financial services firm with a leading edge e-commerce strategy. Ms. Pryor has also energized SBLI USA's philanthropic activities, spearheading major contributions to local and national organizations. She has received significant recognition for her achievements and numerous awards and honors for her distinguished community service and leadership in business. Gay Warren Gaddis is president and CEO of T3 (The Think Tank). She started her company in 1989 with a cashed in IRA and two employees. Today, T3 is the largest independent advertising agency wholly-owned by a woman in the country, with offices in Austin, New York and San Francisco and over $200 million in capitalized billings. Organized as a marketing and creative think tank, T3 works with clients including Dell, Marriott, JCPenney, Chase Card Services, UPS, MSN, John Deere, Universal, Ingenix and MTV.

Her dynamic business acumen and corporate culture has led to national recognition. She has been recognized as one of Fast Company’s “Top 25 Women Business Builders,” Inc. magazine’s “Top 10 Entrepreneurs of the Year” and 25 Advertising Working Mothers of the Year by Working Mother magazine. Zarela Martinez, Author & Mexican Food Authority
Leading U.S. Restaurateur

 

Zarela Mart?nez, one of this generation's leading U. S. restaurateurs, was born and raised in Mexico but began cooking professionally during the late 1970's in El Paso, Texas. With the encouragement of Paul Prudhomme and Craig Claiborne, who had been impressed by her vivid Mexican food, she made some nationally noted guest-chef appearances and in 1983 moved her business to New York. Here she quickly made her mark as menu-designer and later executive chef for Cafe Marimba, the city's first serious attempt to recreate regional Mexican cuisine with local resources. A loyal following of diners and food writers responded eagerly when in 1987 she decided to start her own restaurant, Zarela.

Since its opening 17 years ago, New Yorkers have taken Zarela to their hearts. A favorite meeting spot as well as a culinary standard-setter, it regularly wins superlative reviews and professional awards. Now Ms. Martinez is helping cooks and diners everywhere discover the unique Mediterranean-and African-accented regional cooking of Veracruz State through her 13-part public television series Zarela! La Cocina Veracruzana, now airing throughout the country. Her companion cookbook, Zarela's Veracruz (just out in paperback) (Houghton Mifflin 2001) is a culinary voyage of discovery every bit as irresistible as her seminal book Food from my Heart (Macmillan 1992) and the acclaimed The Food and Life of Oaxaca (Macmillan 1997).
In her continuing commitment to bringing regional Mexican food to New York, Zarela has launched an ongoing series of gastronomic festivals featuring foods from different states in Mexico.

In addition to her restaurant work and writing, Ms. Martinez carries on an extensive catering business and gives Mexican cooking lessons as well as lecture/demonstrations on Mexican cuisine and culture, and has acted as a marketing consultant for such clients as Unilever Best Foods, Nestl?, Marriott and Taco Bell.

Zarela's exciting and colorful new Mexican-inspired collection for the home including beautiful things for the kitchen, the table, the bed and bath is now for sale at select WalMart stores and other retail locations under the Zarela Casa label. In 2004, IMAN Cosmetics, Skincare and Fragrances announced its strategic alliance with Proctor & Gamble. Under the licensing and distribution agreement, the prestige brand once again broke convention and is now available at mass retailers including Target, Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Duane Reade.

In addition to running a global beauty company, Iman is actively involved in several charities, including The Children’s Defense Fund, For All Kids Foundation, and Action Against Hunger.

In 2006 Iman became the Global Ambassador for KEEP A CHILD ALIVE: (www.keepachildalive.org). One dollar a day provides lifesaving ARV drugs for African children (and families); the same drugs that have turned AIDS in the West from certain death to a manageable chronic illness, when properly managed. She has conceived and is spearheading a national campaign called I AM AFRICAN to help awareness and raise funds for the AIDS pandemic that is ravaging her homeland.

Iman’s first book, entitled I AM IMAN (Universe, 2001), was an autobiographical sketchbook of her career that questions “the unserious business of fashion and beauty and its serious affect on identity.” Her second book, THE BEAUTY OF COLOR, THE Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color (Putnam Penguin 2005) is the first beauty and makeup book that truly addresses skin tones across the spectrum: Latina, Black, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, Native American, as well as multiple ethnicities. She’s revolutionized the way women with skin of color think
about beauty.

Iman began her career in 1975 as a model and has challenged the prevailing notions of beauty ever since. The daughter of an African diplomat, Iman was born in Somalia and grew up speaking five languages. She studied political science at Nairobi University where she was discovered by legendary photographer Peter Beard.

Her first modeling assignment was for Vogue in 1976. Iman was an instant success in the fashion world, and a muse for fashion designers including Yves. St. Laurent, Versace, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan. During her 14 years as a model, she worked with top photographers Helmut Newton, Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Annie Liebovitz.

A mother of two, Iman is married to David Bowie with whom she has a daughter, Alexandria Zahra. Iman’s eldest daughter is Zulehka Haywood.

Deborah Axelrod, Leading Breast Cancer Surgeon
NYU Medical Center

 

Deborah Axelrod, M.D. is Director of Clinical Breast Services and Breast Surgery and Medical Director of Community Cancer Education and Outreach at NYU’s new Clinical Cancer Center in New York City and a board certified surgeon who specializes in breast diseases and breast cancer. She is Associate Professor of Surgery at New York University School of Medicine.

A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Axelrod completed a surgical oncology research fellowship at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. She is widely published in her field and has been in practice since 1988.

Dr. Axelrod is a prominent speaker throughout the country, presenting to both lay and professional audiences information on new developments in risk-reduction measures, detection and treatment of breast cancer.

Under the leadership of Dr. Axelrod, monthly programs for the community (Insights In Context ™ ) are offered throughout the year emphasizing diagnosis, treatment and risk reduction of cancer in women. Prior to joining the faculty at NYU, Dr. Axelrod was Chief of the Comprehensive Breast Center at St. Vincents Hospital and Medical Center in New York City (1999-2004). She initiated the Community Lecture Series program which is successfully into its sixth year offering lectures and resources to the community. Works of art by patients at the Saint Vincents Cancer Center are displayed as a rotating show since the opening of the Center in 1999. Dr. Axelrod was instrumental in initiating the Artist in Residence Program offering art therapy to all patients under treatment for cancer. This program is in collaboration with the Creative Center for Women With Cancer which also continues a long relationship at NYU Medical Center and now at the NYU Clinical Cancer Center. From 1988 to 1999, Dr. Axelrod was Physician – in – Charge of the Louis Venet MD Comprehensive Breast Service at Beth Israel Hospital and Medical Center in New York City.

Dr. Axelrod is the recipient of a 2001 Craft grant awarded by the Susan G. Komen Foundation to screen and recruit Chinese women at risk for breast cancer into the STAR trial (study of tamoxifen and raloxifene).

She co-authored the book Bosom Buddies: Lessons and Laughter about Breast Health and Cancer with Rosie O’Donnell and Tracy Chuterian-Semler, that uses humor to help cope with breast cancer. ALL proceeds for the book are being donated to various non-profit breast cancer organizations to help fund ongoing outreach, support, education and research programs. Dr. Axelrod founded www.breastdoc.com, an educational website.

Always at the forefront of patient advocacy, Dr. Axelrod is active nationally and in the community- dedicated to educating the public about breast cancer and the need to take an active role in one’s own health care. She is on the Board of Directors at SHARE (Self-Help Group for Women with Breast or Ovarian Cancer) in New York City and the Susan G. Komen Foundation, Northern New Jersey Affiliate and Cancer 101, offering organizational resources to men and women diagnosed with cancer. She has been appointed to the Medical Resource Council at Gilda’s Club in New York City (a cancer support community for people with cancer and their families) and Health Advisory Board at Hadassah and Medical Advisory Board at the Young Survival Coalition and Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert (JALBCA).

In 2000, Dr. Axelrod was the honoree at the annual SHARE-A-WALK in Central Park and received the Special Recognition Award from JALBCA (Judges and Lawyers Breast Cancer Alert) and the Humanitarian Tower of Hope Award from the Israel Cancer Research Fund. In 2001, Dr. Axelrod received the Creative Spirit Award from the Creative Center for Women with Cancer and was also the honoree of the 5th Annual Pink Tie Ball sponsored by the Susan G. Komen Foundation, North Jersey Affiliate. In November 2003, Dr. Axelrod received the Annual Gilda’s Club, It’s Always Something Award.

On November 6th, the Compass award will be presented to Dr. Axelrod by the Women's Leadership Exchange® in New York City.

In an effort to bring original works of art to hospitals – Dr. Axelrod founded Say Ahh (say art helps heal) ™ . Say Ahh ?, a non-profit organization, and a voice of the community, reaches out through visual arts to turn hallways into hope and to convert bare walls into canvases of inspiration and inner peace.

Deborah Axelrod lives in Summit, New Jersey with her husband Dr. Noel Raskin and two very active boys, Ben and Max, ages fourteen and sixteen. In addition to being a baseball mom, Dr. Axelrod is past Chairperson of the Cultural arts program at her children’s school and on the Board of Directors for Summit Junior Baseball. Deborah enjoys weight lifting and hiking and follows the advice she gives her patients - maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Carmen founded SDI in 1992 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The company develops and provides its clients with web-based vendor and supply chain management services and tools, IT and technical temporary staffing, and payrolling services with an emphasis in low cost, quality-driven services.

Carmen is an experienced and highly visible entrepreneur who has achieved success through her outstanding work ethic and the development of a clear vision of her company's future. This has enabled her to grow SDI from a small startup to a global operation with business operations in the U.S., Canada, Europe, China, and India.

Today, SDI is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company. This major achievement reflects Carmen’s business philosophy and practices of providing quality and cost-effective services to its rapidly growing global client base. Further, SDI is a member of the National Minority Supplier Business Council (NMSDC) and is certified as a Minority Business Enterprise by the NMSDC councils in Georgia, Florida, and New York/New Jersey. Dr. Dorothy Height, Former President
National Council of Negro Women
Vanguard Award Winner

 

For nearly half a century, Dorothy Irene Height has given leadership to the struggle for equality and human rights for all people. Her life exemplifies her passionate commitment for a just society and her vision of a better world.

Dorothy Height was born in Richmond, Virginia, March 24, 1912, and educated in the public schools in Rankin, Pennsylvania, a small town near Pittsburgh, where her family moved when she was four. Dorothy Irene Height established herself early as a dedicated student with exceptional oratorical skills. With a $1,000 scholarship for winning a national oratorical contest sponsored by the Elks and a record of scholastic excellence, she enrolled in New York University and earned the bachelor and master's degrees in four years. She did further postgraduate work at Columbia University and the New York School of Social Work.

Employed in many capacities by both government and social service associations, she is known primarily by her leadership role with the YWCA and the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW). While working as a caseworker for the New York Welfare Department, she was the first Black named to deal with the Harlem riots of 1935 and became one of the young leaders of the National Youth Movement of the New Deal era. It was during this period that Height's career as a civil rights advocate began to unfold, as she worked to prevent lynching, desegregate the armed forces, reform the criminal justice system and for free access to public accommodations. But it was November 7, 1937 that was the turning point in the life of Dorothy Height who still remembers the day that changed her life. Mary McLeod Bethune, founder and president of the National Council of Negro Women, noticed the assistant director of the Harlem YWCA who was escorting Eleanor Roosevelt into an NCNW meeting. Height answered Mrs. Bethune's call for help and joined Bethune in her quest for women's rights to full and equal employment, pay and education.

This was the beginning of her dual role as YWCA staff and NCNW volunteer, integrating her training as a social worker and her commitment to rise above the limitations of race and sex.

Height quickly rose through the ranks of the YWCA, from the Emma Ransom House in Harlem to the Phyllis Wheatley Branch in Washington, D.C. By 1944 and until 1977, Height was a staff member of the National Board of the YWCA of the USA where she held several leadership positions. In these positions she assumed responsibility for developing leadership training activities for volunteers and staff as well as programs to promote interracial and ecumenical education. And in 1965 she inaugurated and became Director of the Center for Racial Justice, a position she held until 1977 when she retired from the National YWCA of the USA.

Ella L.J. Edmondson Bell, Author and Scholar; Management Consultant on Race and Gender in Organizations

 

Ella L.J. Edmondson Bell is an author, managerial consultant, nationally recognized researcher and advocate on women?s work place issues. She is the co-author of Our Separate Ways: Black and White Women and the Struggle for Professional Identity. The intent of the book is twofold. First, it is to bring black professional women out of the shadow of white women; and second, to encourage an authentic and healing dialogue between women, regardless of their race. Business Week Online reports that Our Separate Ways, ?offers an unflinching look at racism?and doesn?t shirk from taking on taboo subjects? that tend to separate women. Marcia Ann Gillespie, the Editor-In-Chief of Ms. Magazine, describes Our Separate Ways as ?a fabulous book that I literally couldn?t put down, making notes in the margins as I read it, so many important insights, so much wisdom.?

The initial research for Our Separate Ways began with funding from the Rockefeller and Ford Foundations.

As a nationally respected managerial consultant, Dr. Bell has shared her expertise and knowledge on discriminatory barriers in the workplace, strategic leadership, managing inclusion and work?life balance with corporate leaders across the country. She was worked with PepsiCo, Salomon Smith Barney, Mellon Private Asset Management, New England Telephone Company, The U.S. Department of Labor, Ford Motor Company, and United Way of America. Dr. Bell, in her spirited style, has served as a beacon of light for women of all generations wanting to develop their leadership abilities without having to sacrifice significant chunks of their soul, their spirit and their lives.

Dr. Bell?s research on women and her savvy demeanor have earned the media?s respect. She is regularly quoted in the Wall Street Journal, The Boston Globe, Business Week, The Los Angeles Times, Newsweek, Working Women, Black Enterprise and Essence Magazine. In addition, she has been a guest on National Public Radio and appeared on CNN?s, Democracy inAmerica, ?96.

Another subject Dr. Bell doesn?t shy away from is her own experiences of being the lone black woman in the ivy-covered halls of academia. She has held groundbreaking faculty appointments in several of the top business schools in the country including Yale?s School of Organization and Management, Sloan School of Management at MIT and the Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth.

Adopted by James and Geneva Louise Bell when she was six weeks old, Dr. Bell was raised in The Bronx, New York City. Her high school guidance counselor told her it was best for her to switch from academic studies that would enable her to attend college to a vocational program for secretarial studies. But hard work, intelligence, determination and chutzpah enabled her to attend Mills College of Education, where she received a B.S. degree in early childhood education and behavioral sciences. Two Masters Degrees from Teacher?s College, Columbia University and a doctorate in Organizational Behavior from Case Western Reserve University, gave her career as an elementary school teacher a totally different direction.

While researching and writing Our Separate Ways, Dr. Bell searched for and reunited with her biological family. Her name is a testimony to the many ways she continues to reconstruct her life and inspires others to do the same. Upon reuniting with her biological family, she changed her name from Ella Louise Bell, to Ella L.J. Edmondson Bell combining both her adoptive and biological ancestral roots.

Dr. Bell resides in Charlotte, NC and Hanover, NH where she is an Associate Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth College. She earned her doctorate in Organizational Behavior at Case Western Reserve University.

From 2000 to 2003, Susan was a Senior Vice President and General Manager for Consumer Card. Her experience spanned to managing American Express co-brand credit card portfolios and loyalty programs such as the Company?s award-winning Membership Rewards program. She had responsibility for alliance development and partner relations with other major brands such as Delta, Costco, Continental and Starwood, to bring value to American Express customers.

During her 15 year-tenure with American Express, Susan also held sales and marketing positions in the Establishment Services group where she built relationships with Merchants to accept the American Express Card, and was an internal strategic consultant within the corporation?s Strategic Planning Group.

Susan is a member of the American Express Global Management Team ? a council of top senior leaders who provide strategic direction for the Company. She currently co-chairs American Express? Women?s Issues Network providing resources and initiatives on development of female talent in American Express and is a long-time mentor and advisor for Women Unlimited, Inc., a leadership development program focused on executive women. Linda Kaplan Thaler is responsible for some of America’s most famous, relevant and touching advertising campaigns in the industry, including the Aflac duck quack heard round the world and the daring “Yes, Yes, Yes” for Clairol Herbal Essences. Much of her work has become part of the American pop-culture landscape. She has authored and composed jingles that are among the industry’s gold standard, including “I Don’t Wanna Grow Up, I’m a Toys ‘R’ Us Kid,” and “Kodak Moments.” Of her 13 Clio Awards, two were for Best Original Music and Lyrics. Linda has worked on several political campaigns, including the presidential runs for Clinton/Gore in 1992 and Hillary Clinton in 2008. 


Today, Linda is the Chairman of Publicis Kaplan Thaler, a fully integrated advertising agency with digital, social and technology at its core. The agency is the U.S. flagship within the Publicis Worldwide Network, and its blue-chip client roster includes: P&G, Citi, Nestle, L’Oreal, Merck, Pfizer, Cadillac and Wendy’s, among many others.


Linda is also a best-selling author and television personality appearing on

In addition to her numerous awards, Linda’s creative talents have earned her the prestigious New York Women in Communications Matrix Award, the Advertising Woman of the Year Award from Advertising Women of New York, the UJA’s Mac Dane Humanitarian Award, the Girl Scout’s Woman of Distinction Award, and was named one of Advertising Age’s “Most Influential Women in Advertising.” Linda was also presented with a New York Women in Film and Television’s Muse Award, the first woman in advertising to receive this honor. Most recently, Linda was inducted into the American Advertising Federation 2015 Advertising Hall of Fame.


A native New Yorker, Linda was a Phi Beta Kappa and Magna cum Laude graduate of CCNY, with a BA in psychology and a MA in music. Dixie Carter, Actress, Singer & Writer

 

In television, Ms. Carter is best known for her roles as Julia Sugarbaker on the long-running comedy hit, Designing Women, and more recently as Randi King, the smart, sharp tongued lawyer with a southern rasp on Family Law.
Besides Designing Women and Family Law, Ms. Carter has starred in four other TV series: On Our Own, Out of the Blue, Filthy Rich, and Diff'rent Strokes. She has also starred in television movies and mini-series including the CBS-TV movie, The Killing of Randy Webster, where she met her husband, actor Hal Holbrook.
In addition to her television credits, Ms. Carter also has an extensive theatre background and began her acting career at the Front Street Theatre in Memphis. Most recently, she starred as Mrs. Arbuthnot in Oscar Wilde's A Woman of No Importance at the Shakespeare Theater in Washington, D.C., and alongside real-life husband, Hal Holbrook, in A.R. Gurney's acclaimed Love Letters at several venues nationwide.
On Broadway, Carter played to standing ovations as Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's play, Master Class. She has also performed the role of Melba in the revival of Pal Joey and Anne in the musical Sextet. Off-Broadway, she starred in A Coupla' White Chicks Sittin' Around Talkin' and at the New York Public Theatre in Taken in Marriage, Fathers and Sons, and Jesse and the Bandit Queen, for which she won a Theatre World Award.
A fixture on the New York cabaret scene since the days of Julius Monk's Upstairs at the Downstairs revues, Ms. Carter also enjoys a successful cabaret and concert career and travels across the country performing her critically and popularly acclaimed cabaret act. In addition, Ms. Carter travels extensively as a public speaker and is a member of the President?s Committee for the Arts & Humanities. Members of the committee, which recognizes that the Nation?s cultural life contributes to the vibrancy of society and the strength of democracy, are appointed by the President
Dixie Carter?s credits span various media in addition to her acting credits. Her CD, Dixie Carter Sings John Wallowitch Live at the Carlyle, was released in 1991; she is the producer of two fitness videos, Dixie Carter's Unworkout (platinum release) and Yoga for You; and, she is also the author of Trying to Get to Heaven, which was published by Simon Schuster in 1996.
Born in McLemoresville, Tennessee, and valedictorian of her high school class, Ms. Carter attended the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and Rhodes College in Memphis, from which she has since received an honorary doctorate. She is a graduate of the University of Memphis.
Carter, her husband, her father and their two dogs reside in Los Angeles with frequent trips back to her hometown of McLemoresville. Her daughters, Ginna and Mary Dixie, are pursuing careers in theater and film.

Ruby Dee, Actress, Writer and Activist

 

Award-winning stage and screen actress, writer and activist, Ruby Dee is perhaps best known for her roles in "A Raisin in the Sun," "Purlie Victorious," Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing," and "Buck and the Preacher." She has appeared on CBS's "Touched by an Angel," and is the author of My One Good Nerve, a collection of stories and poetry, as well as With Ossie and Ruby: In This Life Together, written with her late husband, Ossie Davis. Recently, she received two daytime Emmy nominations for her role as Alice the Great on Bill Cosby's animated series "Little Bill," and in the television production of "Their Eyes Were Watching God."

Ms. Dee has appeared on Alex Haley's "Roots: The Next Generation," Lorraine Hansberry's "To Be Young, Gifted and Black," and "The James Mink Story." Recent film credits include Anne Rice's "Feast of All Saints," "Passing Glory" for TNT, "Having Our Say" for CBS and Showtime's "A Storm in Summer." Her voice can be heard on the audiobook version of Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God.

Ms. Dee received an Obie Award for her performance in "Boesman and Lena," and appeared in "Wedding Band" on television and for the New York Shakespeare Festival. Other stage credits include: "Long Day's Journey Into Night," "King Lear," "The Taming of the Shrew," "Agamemnon," and "The Glass Menagerie." She is especially proud of her work with off-Broadway and community theaters and has appeared in "Checkmates," "Zora Is My Name," and "The Disappearance," as well as many others. Most recently, Ms. Dee appeared on state in the New York and Atlanta productions of "St. Lucy's Eyes," and in the New York production of "A Last Dance for Sybil," a play written for her by Ossie Davis. In 1988, Ms. Dee was inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame.

With Ossie Davis, Ms. Dee has hosted the African American Heritage Movie Network's series of black film classics for five seasons. "The Forgotten Cinema," consisting of films and parts of films made by a few early black filmmakers, was restored and presented by the Turner Network.

Through their company, Emmalyn Productions Company, Inc., they have produced with PBS "Martin Luther King: The Dream and the Drum," and "A Walk Through the 20th Century with Bill Moyers," as well as the critically-acclaimed series "With Ossie and Ruby." In addition, she has produced "Today Is Ours" for CBS, and an anthology of poetry by junior high students entitled Glowchild.

She received an Emmy Award for her role in "Decoration Day," a Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation. She was inducted into the NAACP Image Award Hall of Fame in 1989 and, in 1994, with her husband, she was given the Silver Circle Award by the Academy of Television Arts & Science. In 1995, they were recipients of the prestigious National Medal of Arts Award bestowed at the White House by President and Mrs. Clinton.

Although born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ms. Dee considers herself a product of Harlem where she grew up and became a member of the American Negro Theater. She later studied with Paul Mann, Lloyd Richards and Morris Carnovsky and received a B.A. from Hunter College.

Pernille Spiers-Lopez, Former President

Pernille Spiers-Lopez has been with IKEA for 21 years and has held several top executive positions. She has been a member of The Executive Management Team of the IKEA Group for 10 years. Pernille decided to leave IKEA July 1, 2011 after 2 1/2 years of commuting between Chicago and Europe.

Most recently Pernille Spiers-Lopez has been the Global HR Manager for the IKEA Group and its 135,00 employees. With her extensive business experience, she has developed and implemented a new business focused HR Strategy empowering the organization, it’s leaders and co-workers to grow business and people together.

Prior to that Pernille Spiers-Lopez was President of IKEA North America for 8 years( 2001-2009)
Under her leadership, IKEA US grew from a small ‘niche’ retailer with 15 stores to a nationally recognized ‘major player’ with 37 stores. IKEA, the leading home furnishings company, is recognized for offering great value, as well as being a good company to work for with strong social and environmental programs.

A native of Denmark, Pernille Spiers-Lopez has lived in the United States for 28 years. Prior to joining IKEA, she worked with several smaller retail operations, and oversaw 24 Door Store furniture locations. Pernille was also part of the team responsible for opening two STOR Home Furnishing stores in Los Angeles, CA, which were later purchased by IKEA.

Pernille came to IKEA North America in 1990, as Marketplace Manager for the West Coast stores, and she later moved on to become store manager in Pittsburgh. Her energy and commitment to the co-workers of the organization brought Pernille to the leadership of IKEA North America Human Resources by 1997. In this role, she was instrumental in developing and implementing progressive policies both in the US and globally.

During her tenure as President of IKEA North America, Pernille brought a wealth of experience in sales, retail management, human resources and home furnishings industry knowledge. This experience was grounded in and enhanced by her commitment to the IKEA culture and values that are at the heart of the company and its success. It is through this humanistic way of doing business and her leadership that Pernille has brought to IKEA perhaps her greatest asset: the ambition to foster an environment of growth, inclusion, balance and empowerment – while doing good business.

Under Pernille’s leadership, IKEA has been named to Working Mother magazine’s list of 100 Best Companies for 2003 , 2004 and 2005 and FORTUNE"S 2004 and 2005 "100 Best Companies to Work For"® List. In 2007, IKEA was voted by Ethisphere, one of the 100 Most Ethical companies.

Ms. Allred is an attorney and a partner in the law firm of Allred, Maroko & Goldberg. She has been practicing law for over 27 years. Her law firm, Allred, Maroko & Goldberg, handles cases involving employment discrimination, including sex, race and physical handicap discrimination, sexual harassment, wrongful termination; family law, including divorce and custody disputes; and civil rights and civil litigation.

She has won countless honors for her pioneering legal work on behalf of women's rights and rights for minorities who are discriminated against on account of their gender, race, age, sexual orientation, or physical condition.

An active feminist, Ms. Allred founded and is currently serving as President of the Women's Equal Rights Legal Defense and Education Fund (WERLDEF).

Ms. Allred was a talk show host on KABC TalkRadio in Los Angeles for 14 years and is a columnist for the legal newspaper The Daily Journal.

Recently she was selected by USA Today as one of the 25 most important radio talk show hosts in America.

She has also been nominated for an "Emmy" three times for her television commentaries on KABC-TV.

Articles by or about Ms. Allred have appeared in publications such as Time Magazine, The New York Times, Ms. Magazine, The American Lawyer, The Daily News, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Herald Examiner and The London Times. In July 1990, Los Angeles Magazine named her "One of the 30 Most Powerful People in Los Angeles" and in 1994, "One of the 50 Most Interesting People in Los Angeles." Time Magazine called her "one of the nation's most effective advocates of family rights and feminist causes."

In 1985, Ms. Allred was awarded the President's Award by the National Association of Women Lawyers. In 1986 she received a commendation from the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors for her "exceptional record of achievement" and a commendation from Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley "for her many outstanding contributions to the justice system."

In June 1986, at a White House Luncheon, President Ronald Reagan presented her with the "1986 President's Volunteer Action Award" for outstanding volunteerism for her development of an innovative child support amnesty program in California.

Ms. Allred is also the only individual in the nation to win the 1986 Public Service Award from the National Association of Federal Investigators, and she was voted one of 1987's "Best Lawyers in America" by lawyers who won that honor in 1986. She has recently rewon this honor by being chosen again by her peers as one of the best lawyers in America in 1991.
California Law Business, a publication of The Daily Journal named her ?One of The Hundred Most Influential Lawyers in California" 2 years in a row (2000-01).

Most recently, she was named a 2004 Southern California "SuperLawyer" by Law & Politics and Los Angeles Magazine.

Ms. Allred was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and earned her B.A. with honors in English from the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her M.A. from New York University and her J.D. cum laude from Loyola University School of Law in Los Angeles. She was also awarded an Honorary J.D. from the University of West Los Angeles School of Law. In addition to being an attorney, Ms. Allred has held California life credentials in secondary school education and supervision. She taught in public schools for six and one half years, and was also a lecturer at the University of Southern California for several years.

Ms. Allred has two grandchildren, Sarah and Sam, and her daughter Lisa is an attorney who anchors a daily show on Court TV.

Doris Christopher, Founder
The Pampered Chef, a $700 million Company

 

Inspired by her dedication to preserving the tradition of family mealtimes and driven by the spirit of entrepreneurism, Doris Christopher founded The Pampered Chef from the basement of her suburban Chicago home in 1980.

Her experience as a home economics teacher and at-home mother enabled her to recognize the need for time-saving kitchen tools and techniques designed to make cooking quick and easy. She came up with a simple plan: offer professional-quality kitchen equipment directly to the consumers through in-home cooking demonstrations performed by a sales force of ?Kitchen Consultants.? Let customers see how the products work, try them out and even taste the results.

With the support of her husband, Jay, and two young daughters, Julie and Kelley, Christopher put her plan into action. More than twenty years later, her business has moved to a succession of progressively larger facilities and, at the time of the Berkshire Hathaway acquisition, blossomed into a $700 million enterprise.

The Pampered Chef became a member of the Direct Selling Association (DSA) in 1986. Christopher was named to the Board of Directors in 1992, and then served as Chairperson. She is currently the Immediate Past Chairperson of the DSA and Chairperson of the Direct Selling Education Foundation (DSEF), a branch organization of the DSA.

Her unfailing commitment to fostering entrepreneurship in women is woven into the very fabric of The Pampered Chef. Suzanne de Passe, CEO

Suzanne de Passe?s rise to fame came much like the musical groups she has worked with. Blessed with a keen ear for talent, de Passe began her career at Motown Records as creative assistant to company founder Berry Gordy. She brought in the Jackson 5 and subsequently rose to the position of president of Motown Productions and is now Chairman and CEO of de Passe Entertainment. A powerful figure in Hollywood, her work encompasses the television, movie, and music industries.
De Passe?s work has earned her numerous awards, including an Academy Award nomination for co-writing the screenplay Lady Sings the Blues, as well as two Emmy Awards and two NAACP Image Awards as Executive Producer of Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever and Motown Returns to the Apollo. She also served as Executive Producer for the highly acclaimed, award winning western mini-series, Lonesome Dove, as well as Small Sacrifices, The Jacksons: An American Dream, and Buffalo Girls?all of which were nominated for an Emmy Award for Best Mini-Series. As Executive Producer of the four-hour NBC mini-series, The Temptations, de Passe won an NAACP Image Award for Best Mini-Series and was nominated for both a Golden Globe Award and Emmy Award for Best Mini-Series. She has appeared as a speaker before numerous businesses and industry trade groups, including the Miller Brewing Company, Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyers Association, Burger King Franchise Owners Association, and the Chicago Minority Business Development Council. Harriet Michel, President
National Minority Supplier Development Council

 

Harriet R. Michel is the President of the National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC), a private non-profit organization that expands business opportunities for minority-owned companies. NMSDC encourages mutually beneficial economic links between minority suppliers and the public and private sectors, and helps build a stronger, more equitable society by supporting and promoting minority business development.

The NMSDC Network, which includes 39 affiliated regional councils, matches more than 15,000 certified minority businesses (Asian, Black, Hispanic and Native American) with its more than 3,500 corporate members?including most Fortune 500 companies?that want to purchase their goods and services. In 2003, NMSDC member corporations' purchases from minority-owned businesses reached $80.2 billion. Before joining NMSDC in September 1988, Ms. Michel was a resident fellow at the Institute of Politics, Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University, where she taught a course on politics and public policy issues and wrote about Black leadership.

As executive director of the New York Foundation from 1972 to 1977, Ms. Michel was the first Black woman to head a major foundation. She is a founding member of the Association of Black Foundation Executives and has been a board member of the Council on Foundations. From 1977 to 1979, Ms. Michel was director of the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Community Youth Employment Programs/CETA in Washington, D.C., where she supervised the allocation of $2 billion for employment and training programs. From 1983 to February 1988, Ms. Michel was president and chief executive officer of the New York Urban League. As chief administrator, she was responsible for services provided to over 70,000 New Yorkers annually through more than 20 programs in education, employment, health/social services and housing. Ms. Michel was the first woman to head the New York Urban League, largest of the National Urban League's 113 affiliates, since its founding in 1919.

Ms. Michel has had wide experience in developing educational policy and programs. As director of special projects for the National Scholarship Service and Fund for Negro Students, she created the first national college fair for Black students. Ms. Michel has served as a member of the New York City Board of Higher Education, and as a vice chair of the New York State Advisory Council on Post-Secondary Education.

Ms. Michel and her husband, Yves Michel, are small-business owners. They have two sons and make their home in Harlem. Born in Pittsburgh, Ms. Michel received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, where she is currently trustee emeritus.

Gloria Steinem, Leader in Women's Rights, Activist and Best-selling Author

Spanning two centuries as a writer and an activist, Gloria Steinem has been a leader in the women's rights movement. Steinem has never lived her life by conventional definitions. In the early 1960s, when there were few women journalists and almost no women covering politics, Steinem invented her career as a freelance writer with a political beat. When the women's movement began changing society, Steinem was at its helm, helping to found Ms. magazine, the National Women's Political Caucus, the Women's Action Alliance, and the Ms. Foundation for Women. Then, in the 1980s and 1990s, Steinem became a best-selling author with books that include Outrageous Acts and Everyday Rebellions, Revolution From Within: A Book of Self-Esteem, Doing Sixty, and Moving Beyond Words.

Steinem has spent her life promoting "sisterhood" among all women, regardless of political party, race, religion, or economic status. Early in her career, she defined feminism as simply "the belief that women are full human beings." In Steinem's view, feminism asks a basic question: Why do people assume that one group has to dominate the other? Why not assume there will be cooperation instead of domination? In her books, Steinem argues for the causes that have occupied her energies for two decades. She continues to call for an end to women's disadvantaged condition in the paid labor force, for the elimination of sexual exploitation, and for the achievement of true equality of the sexes.

Crier began her television career at CNN. She was co-anchor of both Inside Politics, a daily show which followed the 1992 political process, and The World Today, the premier nighttime newscast. Additionally, she hosted Crier & Company, a live, half-hour news talk show. This show included a panel of female policy experts who discussed national and international issues of the day.

Prior to her accomplished career in television journalism, Crier presided over the 162nd District Court in Dallas County, TX as a State District Judge. When she took the bench in 1984, she became the youngest elected state judge in Texas history. From 1982 to 1984, Crier was a civil litigation attorney in Dallas and before that, an Assistant District Attorney and Felony Chief Prosecutor for the Dallas County District Attorney?s office from 1978 to 1981.

In 1996, Crier received the Les Femmes du Monde Award which is sponsored by the Dallas Council on World Affairs. The Ex-Students? Association of the University of Texas at Austin awarded her the 1990 Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award. She was recognized as one of TV Guide?s ?Dynamic Dozen? in 1990. Also in that year, the American Bar Association?s Barrister magazine honored her among their ?Twenty Young Lawyers Who Make a Difference.?

Crier, a native of Dallas, earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and international affairs from the University of Texas. She received a Juris Doctor in two and a half years from Southern Methodist University School of Law. Crier lives in Westchester County, New York. In her free time, she raises and trains Arabian Horses. Crier also enjoys playing golf and scuba diving.

Dr. Lorraine Monroe, President and CEO of The Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute (LMLI) was the founding principal of the renowned Frederick Douglass Academy in Central Harlem. Dr. Monroe translates her extensive experience in New York City public schools ? as teacher, dean, assistant principal, principal and Deputy Chancellor for Curriculum and Instruction ? into the guiding set of Monroe Leadership Principles that define the work of The Lorraine Monroe Leadership Institute. Dr. Monroe is a national and international consultant whose groundbreaking work has been featured on 60 Minutes, Tony Brown?s Journal, The McCreary Report with Bill McCreary, the Tom Snyder Show and in Ebony Magazine, The New York Times, the Reader?s Digest, Fast Company Business Magazine and the nationally syndicated Parade Magazine. Lupe Valdez, The First Woman Sheriff of Dallas County

 

Lupe Valdez has worked to protect the lives and property of American citizens at home and abroad for more than 24 years. With experience in homeland security, anti-terrorism investigations, and criminal law enforcement, and with personal qualities and academic accomplishments that enhance this experience, she is uniquely qualified to serve as Dallas County Sheriff.

Lupe has been extensively involved with civic and community organizations, including: the Civil Service Adjunct Board, the Women's Business Network, the Hispanic Women's Network of Texas, Big Brother/Big Sister Programs, and the Women in Federal Law Enforcement Association. Her work as a federal agent as well as her community service have provided her with the experience needed to run a large bureaucratic county agency smoothly and with integrity.

Lupe Valdez, one of eight children of migrant farm worker parents, was raised in San Antonio. In her early years, she worked in the fields. She then worked up to two jobs at a time as she put herself through college, earning a Bachelor?s Degree in Business Administration. She developed sterling work habits which propelled her in her career in law enforcement.

While Lupe Valdez worked in law enforcement, she demonstrated her commitment to constant improvement by earning a Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Arlington.

In the contest for sheriff, Lupe Valdez alone has a demonstrated record of accomplishment in regional, national, and international law enforcement. Beginning her career as a jailer in a county jail and then a federal prison, she subsequently served as an investigator in multiple agencies. While serving as a U. S. Customs agent, she was sent to an array of assignments in large cities throughout the United States, as well as selected hot spots in Central and South America. She was selected as one of only seven officers to train officers in selected foreign law enforcement agencies. As a team leader in the federal Counter Smuggling Initiative, Ms. Valdez implemented the highly effective public/private partnership known as the Business Anti-Smuggling Cooperative.


She has continued her commitment to public service by serving as a board member of the City of Dallas Civil Service Adjunct Board, the Funding Panel Review of the United Way of Greater Dallas, and a mentor in the Dallas Independent School District?s Big Brothers/Big Sisters Program. Ms. Valdez is a member of Women in Federal Law Enforcement, Texas Narcotics Officer?s Association, and the Hispanic Women?s Network of Texas. She lives in Dallas, Texas.

Jane Fonda, Activist
for Women and Children around the world

After tremendous success as a stage and screen actress, Jane Fonda now focuses her efforts on community service and social change ? with much of her work devoted to the program she founded in 1995, the Georgia Campaign for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (G-CAPP). Fonda chairs this statewide effort to reduce the high rates of adolescent pregnancy in Georgia through community, youth and family development, sustainable economic development, and legislative advocacy.

Fonda has long been known for activism and advocacy on environmental issues, human rights, and the empowerment of women and girls. Among the scores of community projects she has spearheaded is the Laurel Springs Children?s Camp. This summer program ran for 15 years at her ranch in Santa Barbara, California, using performing arts to build self-esteem and cooperation among children of all races and socio-economic backgrounds.

In 2000, Ms. Fonda traveled to Nigeria and produced a film, in collaboration with the International Women's Health Coalition, entitled "Generation 2000: Changing Girls' Realities."

At the Emory School of Medicine Fonda established the Jane Fonda Center for Adolescent Reproductive Health which engages in research, education and training activities that have the potential for creating needed social change as well as enhancing service delivery to children, youth and families, including adolescent reproductive health. In addition, Ms. Fonda's gift has endowed a faculty chair in the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics in Emory University School of Medicine named the Marion Howard Chair in Adolescent Reproductive Health.

In 1994, Ms. Fonda was named Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Population Fund.

Fonda was born in New York City in 1937, the daughter of Henry Fonda and Frances Seymour Fonda. She attended the Emma Willard School in Troy, New York, and Vassar College. In her late teens, Fonda studied with renowned acting coach Lee Strasberg and became a member of the Actors Studio in New York.

Her subsequent work on stage and screen earned numerous nominations and awards, including Oscars (Best Actress in 1971 for Klute and in 1978 for Coming Home) and an Emmy for her performance in The Dollmaker. Along with starring roles in dozens of highly acclaimed productions, Fonda also took on responsibilities as a film and television producer. Her credits include Coming Home, The China Syndrome, Nine to Five, Rollover, On Golden Pond, The Morning After and The Dollmaker.

Fonda revolutionized the fitness industry with the release of Jane Fonda?s Workout in 1982. She followed with the production of 23 home exercise videos, 13 audio recordings, and five books ? selling 16 million copies all together. The original Jane Fonda?s Workout video remains the top grossing home video of all time.

Fonda is currently writing her memoirs, which will be published by Random House in May 2005. Fonda?s interests include reading, writing, horseback riding, hiking, fly fishing and yoga. Fonda lives in Atlanta, along with her daughter Vanessa Vadim, and her two grandchildren. Her son, Troy Garity, lives in Los Angeles and is an actor.

Bernadine Healy, M.D, First woman Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), former President
Health Columnist/Senior Writer at US News and World Report, American Red Cross and Author of A New Prescription for Women's Health

 

Bernadine Healy, a physician with a career in medical education, research, patient care, and health policy, has led the Research Institute at The Cleveland Clinic, the National Institutes of Health, the College of Medicine and Public Health of Ohio State University, and the American Red Cross. She is Medical and Health Columnist for US News and World Report, and serves on the President?s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. Dr. Healy also chairs the Ohio Commission to Reform Medicaid.

Dr. Healy became the president of the American Red Cross on September 1, 1999. There she worked to upgrade blood services with a major focus on the safety and availability of the American blood suppy, expanded bilateral and multi-lateral international work in Africa, India and Turkey and created organization wide action and Congressional support for the inclusion of the Magen David Adom (Israeli Red Cross) into the International Red Cross movement. For more than a year she oversaw the development of a weapons of mass destruction (WMD) response program, and then, unexpectedly, led the response of the American Red Cross to the 9/11 events, mobilizing volunteers, blood and financial support for the range of services triggered by the President?s activation of the Federal Response Plan. These efforts included recovery and response work in New York, Pennsylvania and the Pentagon, creation of a 200 million dollar family grant program for victim?s families, grieving and healing programs in chapters throughout the country, an international response for the families of foreign nationals caught in the disaster, expansion of the armed forces emergency preparedness activities for deployed military, reservists and their families and the initiation of a strategic blood reserve from ?extra? blood collections. To assure transparency and accountability, Dr. Healy established a separately designated Liberty Fund to be used exclusively for response and readiness for 9/11 and its aftermath including future threats and attacks, obligations mandated by federal charter and the Federal Response Plan.

Prior to the American Red Cross, Dr. Healy served as the Dean of the College of Medicine and Public Health and Professor of Medicine at the Ohio State University, starting in 1995. Under Dr. Healy?s leadership, the College expanded its talent and programs in cancer research and tumor genetics, developed its Heart and Lung Institute, received national designation as a Center of Excellence in Women?s Health, and obtained accreditation for its new Public Health School, the first and only School of Public Health in Ohio. Dr. Healy chaired The Ohio State University Research Commission, a task force on university-wide research

Dr. Healy was a past director of the NIH, appointed by President George H. W. Bush to that post in 1990 and the Senate confirmed in early 1991. Under her leadership, the NIH embarked on its first strategic planning process, involving a broad cross-section of NIH constituencies, and guided many of the innovations of her tenure. Dr. Healy established a major intramural laboratory for human genomics at NIH and recruited a world renowned scientific team headed by Dr. Francis Collins to lead the Human Genome program; she oversaw the elevation of nursing to an Institute for Nursing Research, as well as the reentry of the three behavioral institutes including the National Institutes of Mental Health into the NIH enterprise, a separation that had been created years before largely because of the stigma associated with mental illness.

At NIH Dr. Healy conceived of and launched the NIH Women?s Health Initiative, a $625 million effort to study the causes, prevention, and cures of diseases that affect women at midlife and beyond. The WHI was the largest clinical research study ever established and integrated the work of ten disease oriented institutes and forty clinical research sites in its execution. One part of that trial stunned the medical community last summer when, counter to what was seen as medical dogma, combined hormone replacement therapy was linked to more not less heart attacks and strokes. The study will continue to provide studied information on the full range of women's health and disease well into this century.

Prior to her appointment at NIH, Dr. Healy was chairman of the Research Institute of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where she directed the research programs of nine departments, including cardiovascular disease, neurobiology, immunology, cancer, artificial organs, and molecular biology. With an active program of recruitment, fund raising, and strategic planning, the Research Institute more than doubled in size and expanded into newly built research facilities.

In early 1984, Dr. Healy became deputy director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy at the White House. Her appointment, made by President Reagan and confirmed by the Senate, involved her in life science and regulatory issues at the Federal level. She served as chairman of the White House Cabinet Working Group on Biotechnology, was executive secretary of the White House Science Council?s Panel on the Health of Universities, and served as a member of several advisory groups, including the Councils of the National Hearth, Lung, and Blood Institute, as well as the White House Working Group on Health Policy and Economics.

From June 1976 until February 1984, Dr. Healy served on the faculty of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Hospital, where she became Professor of medicine and cardiology, director of the Coronary Care Unit, and was dedicated to patient care, research, and teaching. Dr. Healy also served as assistant dean for post-doctoral programs and faculty development in the medical school.

Among her other professional affiliations, Dr. Healy has served on the American Board of Internal Medicine, the Board of Governors of the American College of Cardiology, and as president of the American Federation of Clinical Research from 1983-1984. She served as president of the American Heart Association (AHA), a volunteer role, in 1988-1989, having been a member of its Board of Directors since 1983. As AHA president, she initiated the Women and Minorities Leadership Task Force and a Women and Heart Disease program that took hold in affiliates nationwide and is still in force today.

Dr. Healy was elected as a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences in 1987 and is a Master of the American College of Physicians. She has been a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard University, the Board of Trustees of Vassar College, several public and private advisory groups and corporate boards, and has received numerous honorary degrees and awards.

The author or co-author of over 220 peer review manuscripts in cardiovascular research and health and science policy. Dr. Healy has served on several editorial boards. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Women?s Health. Her book, entitled, ?A New Prescription for Women?s Health,:? was published in 1996 by Viking/Penguin. For six years Dr. Healy was medical consultant and commentator for CBS News.

Dr.Healy is married to Dr. Floyd Loop and has two daughters, Bartlett and Marie.

Cicely Tyson, Actress
Activist and Humanitarian

 

Actress, lecturer, activist, and humanitarian, Cicely Tyson is one of the most respected and honored talents in American theater and film.
From her starring role on Broadway in "The Blacks" to the Emmy-nominated 1999 HBO film "A Lesson Before Dying," her esteemed career has continually brought her critical praise.

Ms. Tyson is perhaps best known for her performance in the coveted title role of "The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman," in which she played a slave woman ranging in age from 19 to 110, and for which she received an unprecedented two Emmys as Best Actress and as Actress of the Year. In addition, she won an Emmy-award for Best Supporting Actress in the T.V. film "The Oldest Confederate Widow Tells All," and, was nominated for an Emmy award for NBC's series "Sweet Justice."

Her other prominent performances include the following: "Harriet Tubman" in the televised special "A Woman Called Moses," for which she received the Nymph Award as a Best Actress Internationally in 1979; "Binta," the mother of Kunta Kinte, in "Roots;" "Marva Collins," the innovative Chicago schoolteacher, in "Welcome to Success: The Marva Collins Story;" and "Coretta Scott King," the wife of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., in "King" all of which earned her Emmy nominations.

Her critically acclaimed performance as "Rebecca" in the feature film "Sounder" garnered her Best Actress awards from the Atlanta Film Festival, the National Society of Film Critics, The New York Film Critics, an Oscar Nomination, and a nomination from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. Among her other feature film credits are: "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter," "A Man Called Adam," "The River Niger," "Hoodlum," and "Fried Green Tomatoes."

In addition, Ms. Tyson has starred in the following made-for-television
movies: "Acceptable Risks," ABC; "Samaritan: The Mitch Snyder Story," CBS; "Intimate Encounters," CBS; "Playing With Fire," CBS; and "The Women of Brewster Place," ABC; "Blessed Assurance," CBS; "The Road to Galveston," and "Mama Flora's Family." In July 1990, the 25th anniversary of the Watts Rebellion was commemorated by the powerful docudrama, "Heat Wave," TNT, which also starred Ms. Tyson and for which she won an ACE Award. She has starred in two CBS mini-series, "Aftershock" in 1999, and "Jewel" in 2000. She also appeared in "The Rosa Parks Story," which premiered in February, 2002 on CBS.

During the filming of "Cry Freedom," the 1987 movie based on the life of South African Steve Biko, Ms. Tyson flew to Zimbabwe at the request of John Johnson, Publisher of Ebony Magazine, to cover the making of the film as a photojournalist. A high point in her career came when she was invited to perform at the White House before two presidents: President
Shegari of Nigeria and President Carter. In 1985, as Chairperson of
UNICEF, she traveled throughout Africa on a fact-finding mission. In 1988, President Mugabe of Zimbabwe invited her to participate in the conference for "Children on the Front Line." At the behest of Madame La President Houphouet-Boigny, she also flew to the Ivory Coast to assist in the fundraising for the formation of the children's organization, "Ndaya."

On the occasion of the Mandelas' first visit to America, Cicely Tyson served as mistress of ceremonies at a tribute to Winnie Mandela at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and was invited by Mayor Bradley to speak at the tribute to Nelson Mandela in Los Angeles. At the 1988 economic summit of world leaders in Texas, Ms. Tyson was chosen by President Bush to serve as Mistress of Ceremonies.

Because of her deep concern to communicate with young people on a personal basis, each year Ms. Tyson sets aside one month from her working schedule to talk to students on college campuses across the country. She has spoken to over 500 colleges and universities, covering a wide range of topics, such as human rights, education, race relations, and teen pregnancy.

On November 3, 1996, The New Jersey Board of Education unanimously voted to change the name of a public middle and high school to the Cicely Tyson School of Performing and Fine Arts. The school, located in East Orange, New Jersey, has a student body of some 700 primarily
underprivileged students. Ms. Tyson feels that among her many
accolades, this is one of the most meaningful. She teaches a master class in acting, and continues to be involved in many aspects of the student?s education.

Along with Arthur Mitchell, its artistic director, Ms. Tyson founded the internationally celebrated ballet company, The Dance Theater of Harlem, now in its 30th year. She currently serves on the board of the DTH, as well as the American Film Institute, Urban Gateways, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, with Harry Belafonte among others. The success of the first National Black Arts festival in Atlanta which she co-chaired in 1988 led to an invitation to co-chair the second Festival in July 1990. She is a member of the Advisory Board of the Archbishop Tutu Peace Foundation and is a member of the Women's Campaign Fund.

In recognition of her talent and dedication to human rights, Cicely Tyson has been the recipient of numerous honorary doctorates. She holds a record twelve Image Awards as Best Actress from the NAACP, the National Council of Negro Women Award, and has received awards from such Civil Rights organizations as PUSH, CORE, the SCLC, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, among others. Harvard University celebrated her with a Cicely Tyson Day, and Sony named her 1990 Master Film Innovator. Ms. Tyson has written numerous articles for The New York Times and Ebony Magazine, and the Smithsonian hosted a tribute featuring a retrospective of her film career. In 2001, President Clinton asked her to serve as Mistress of Cermonies for the "Welcome to Harlem" event. She also served as Emcee for the Democratic National Committee's "A Night at the Apollo" fund-raiser for voter registration.

A founding member of the Coalition for a Healthy and Active America, in 2002, Ms. Tyson was appointed by President George W. Bush as a Commissioner of the National African American Museum of History and Culture. In 2003, Ms. Tyson was selected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art to provide the audioguide narration for their exhibition "African-American Artists 1929-1945: Prints, Drawings & Paintings." In 2004, Ms. Tyson was honored by the Metropolitan Musuem of Art with an evening entitled "Cicely Tyson: The Renaissance Spirit."

She was a member of the senior editorial team at ESSENCE from 1993 to 1997, during which time she developed story ideas, worked with freelancers and frequently wrote feature stories on a broad variety of social issues. Weathers began her publishing career at Black Enterprise in 1975 covering subjects of interest to African-American professionals and small-business owners. After five years in D.C., Weathers joined the United Nations (U.N.) World Food Program as its information officer. she gained a unique and broad viewpoint of world happenings as she visited sub-Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
As a freelance writer Weathers has had her articles appear in numerous publications including The New York Times, The Financial Times, Family Circle and several U.N. publications.
Weathers and her husband, Ronald Smothers, a veteran reporter for The New York Times, reside in Newark, New Jersey, with their two daughters, Valdorah and Sabreal.

Arianna Huffington is a nationally syndicated columnist and author of ten books. From her childhood years in Greece, Arianna has always been surrounded by politics. As a young man, her father joined the resistance to the Nazi occupation of Greece by editing an underground newspaper. He was caught and spent the rest of the war in a German concentration camp. Her mother was also a part of the resistance. At age 16 Arianna moved to England and attended Cambridge University, graduating with a M.A. in Economics. At 21 she became President of the famed debating society, the Cambridge Union.
Arianna has since gone on to write ten books. Her first book, The Female Woman (Random House, 1974), on the changing roles of women, was translated into 11 languages. In 1978 she published After Reason, a book on political leadership and the intersection of politics and culture. Her biography of Maria Callas: The Woman Behind the Legend (1981), was an international bestseller. Her fourth book, The Gods of Greece, celebrated the power of myths as guides to forgotten dimensions of life and ourselves, and has been republished by Atlantic Monthly Press, with paintings by Fran?oise Gilot.
Her biography of Pablo Picasso, Picasso: Creator and Destroyer, was a major international bestseller and was translated into 16 languages. The book was reissued by Avon Books to coincide with the release of the feature film based on the book, starring Anthony Hopkins as Picasso. In 1994 she published The Fourth Instinct, on the longing for meaning in a secular world. Her seventh book, Greetings From the Lincoln Bedroom, a book of political satire, was published in 1998 by Crown. How to Overthrow The Government on the corruption of our political system and the need for reform, was published in 2000 by Regan Books (Harper Collins). Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption are Undermining America, was published in January 2003 and became a New York Times bestseller.
Arianna has never been content to merely write about the issues of the day. Instead, she has always seen herself as a crusading journalist/activist in the tradition of her hero, Upton Sinclair. She has always walked her talk. In 2000, she helped organize the Shadow Conventions to put the media spotlight on key issues neither major party was willing to address: the way money is corrupting our politics; the ever-widening gulf between the Two Americas; and the nation?s failed $40 billion-a-year ?war on drugs.? Two years later, she co-founded the Detroit Project, a grassroots campaign to prod Detroit to stop building gas-guzzling SUVs and our political leaders to break our addiction to foreign oil. Shortly thereafter, she created the Bermuda Project to expose corporate America?s growing use of shady offshore tax havens as a way to avoid paying its fair share -- a theme that was embraced by all the Democratic presidential candidates. Ms. Red-Horse began her securities industry career in 1978 in the Investment Banking and High Yield Bond departments of Drexel Burnham Lambert.

In 1998 she formed Native Nations Securities, one of the first Native American owned investment banks on Wall Street. That entity today has evolved into Red-Horse Holding Corp., which includes subsidiaries, Red-Horse Asset Management (?RHAM?) and Red-Horse Securities LLC (?RHS?), member NASD, SIPC, and MSRB. Offering a full spectrum of financial services, the family of companies is specifically aimed at serving the financial needs of the Native American community.

She is cum laude alum from UCLA?s Theater Arts Department and also studied at the Lee Strasberg Theater Institute. Her extensive television and film work as an actress includes leading roles on SANTA BARBARA, ANYTHING BUT LOVE, THE DENNIS MILLER SHOW, UNSOLVED MYSTERIES, ABC?s THE SECRET OF LIZARD WOMAN, BABYLON FIVE and she co-starred in the pilot of FOX?s primetime series, FIREFLY. She most recently appeared in the feature film, SIN opposite Ving Rhames.

Frustrated with stereotypical roles available to Native Americans, Valerie turned to writing, developing and producing in 1993. Her original screenplay, LOZEN, was selected for the prestigious Sundance Institute?s Writers Lab in 1995. In 1995, Ms. Red-Horse created the story for the Emmy-winning CBS Special, MY INDIAN SUMMER and in 1996, produced an American Film Institute project, LOOKS INTO THE NIGHT.

Later that year, Ms. Red-Horse formed her own production company, RED-HORSE NATIVE PRODUCTIONS, INC. The premiere project, the independent film, NATURALLY NATIVE, is a contemporary Indian women?s story which Red-Horse wrote, produced, co-directed, starred in, and distributed. NATURALLY NATIVE was funded entirely by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut, premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival, received multiple festival awards and a U.S. theatrical release.

Red-Horse Native Productions recently completed, in association with Gale Anne Hurd?s Valhalla Motion Pictures (Armageddon, Aliens, Terminator, Dante?s Peak), TRUE WHISPERS, a documentary about the Navajo Code Talkers, written, directed and produced by Ms. Red-Horse, which aired in a PBS national TV broadcast in 2002/2003. She also produced, wrote and directed POP HUNTER?S DEW DROP INN for NAPT/PBS and was selected to participate in the FOX Network Diversity Writers Program. Previous projects include WINDOWS ON MARS (NEA), BEAUTY (NBC/Overbrook) and LIVING VOICES (NMAI).

Ms. Red-Horse was awarded the ?Eagle Spirit Award? and ?Producer of the Year? by the American Indian Film festival, was a Girls, Inc. honoree, a Changing Images in America Honoree and a Cherokee Medal of Honor Awardee. She is a current member of the Directors Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild. Ms. Red-Horse served as the live model promoting the Pocahontas doll for Mattel, and heads a Presbyterian ministry team as founder and choreographer, focusing on dance rehabilitation of inner city ethnic women in downtown Los Angeles.

Ms. Red-Horse is married to former NFL football player, Curt Mohl since 1982, and together they have three children.

An advocate of women?s issues for more than 30 years, Marie Wilson is founder and president of The White House Project, co-creator of Take Our Daughters to Work Day and author of Closing the Leadership Gap: Why Women Can and Must Help Run the World (Viking 2004). Wilson founded The White House Project in 1998 in recognition of the need to build a truly representative democracy ? one where women lead alongside men in all spheres.

Wilson started The White House Project while she was still president of the Ms. Foundation for Women, a position she has held since 1984. She recently announced that she would step down as president of the Ms. Foundation on June 30th, 2004 to devote her full energy to The White House Project. She was president of both organizations for six years. In honor of her work, the Ms. Foundation has created The Marie C. Wilson Leadership Fund, which will be under her sole advisement.

Since its inception, The White House Project has been a leading advocate and voice on women?s leadership. Under her stewardship, innovative research and initiatives have been hallmarks of the organization. Highlights of the last six years include groundbreaking research on young women?s political participation, an analysis of women?s appearances as guests on the influential Sunday political talk shows, the convening of women CEOs and executives for two national leadership summits, a conference of international women leaders, a partnership with The Girl Scouts to launch the Ms. President patch and initiatives centering on influencing popular culture.

In March, in conjunction with Wilson?s national book tour for Closing the Leadership Gap, she announced the launch of Vote, Run, Lead, which provides a roadmap for addressing the issues she raises in her book. Through the initiative, The White House Project will recruit and train 1,000 women to run for political office, along with more than 25,000 women to get-out-the-vote for the 2004 election.

Over the last thirty years, Wilson?s accomplishments span becoming the first woman elected to the Des Moines City Council as a member-at-large in 1983, co-authoring the critically acclaimed Mother Daughter Revolution (1993, Bantam Books), and serving as an official government delegate to the United Nations Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing, China in 1995. And in the year 2000, in conjunction with Mattel, Wilson brought the world President Barbie.

As president of the Ms. Foundation for Women, Wilson increased the Foundation?s budget from $400,000 to $8.6 million, established an endowment fund, which now stands at $22 million and created innovative and sustainable programming.

Wilson has been profiled in The New York Times ?Public Lives? column, has appeared on The Today Show, CNN, National Public Radio and other national programs and is quoted widely for her expertise. Born and raised in Georgia, Wilson has five children and four grandchildren.

Gloria Jean, the woman who started the gourmet coffee craze around the world!

Gloria Jean married at age 20 and not long after had a little home with two babies. For some that would have been enough?her hands full with two young sons, a load of wall papering and a freshly minted "Jaycee of the Year" award from the local Jaycees. But characteristically Gloria Jean put in more time to earn extra income to help out. She also enrolled in beauty culture school and got her license as a hairdresser. She bought a neighborhood beauty shop in Wheeling Illinois, which she ran successfully for over 12 years. She swears being a hairdresser was her best education.

While running her beauty shop Gloria Jean?s Gourmet Coffee was invented. This was 1979, in Long Grove Illinois and by1981 she expanded to Woodfield Mall and Northbrook Court.

Gloria learned that having coffee is a simple process, but the way everyone likes it is not so simple. Everyone has his or her own tastes and preferences. There is just no right or wrong way. Now there is abundant variety of choices to suit everyone?s personal tastes. Gloria Jean is quoted "Isn?t it wonderful to know the first decision you make in the morning when you pour that cup of coffee is the right one?" Gloria Jean brought espresso coffee to the front counter. She introduced the sampler packet,coffee gifts ideas, club cards, to name a few and she made the color green popular.

By 1986, she sold her beauty shop and started to franchise her stores with 11 stores in Illinois and Wisconsin. By expansion through franchising, the business flourished both nationally and overseas to over 200 stores. Gloria Jean?s Gourmet Coffees Inc. sold in November 1993. Today there are almost 300 stores worldwide. She also was one of the first women to definitely break the "glass ceiling".

Muriel Siebert, Founder and President
Muriel Siebert & Co., Inc.

 

Muriel "Mickie" Siebert is the founder and president of the discount brokerage firm that bears her name, Muriel Siebert & Co., Inc. She established the firm in 1967 when she became the first woman member of the New York Stock Exchange ("NYSE"), and transformed it into a discount brokerage house on May 1, 1975, the first day that NYSE members were permitted under a new federal law to negotiate commissions. Muriel Siebert & Co. is the only woman-owned NYSE brokerage firm with a national presence. Ms. Siebert continues to oversee the firm's day-to-day operations at its nine branches.

Ms. Siebert started her career as a $65 a week trainee in research at Bache & Co., and became an industry specialist (airlines/aerospace). She later became a partner at Finkel & Co., as well as at Brimberg & Co. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended what is now known as Case Western Reserve University. Although she never graduated, she now holds 14 honorary doctoral degrees.

In 1977, Ms. Siebert took a leave of absence from her firm to serve five years as the first woman Superintendent of Banking for the State of New York under Governor Hugh Carey. As such, she was responsible for the safety and soundness of not only the banks, but also other financial institutions in New York State.

Reflecting upon her commitment to philanthropy and "giving back," Ms. Siebert started her own charitable program in 1990, the Siebert Entrepreneurial Philanthropic Program ("SEPP"). Under SEPP, half of the firm's net commission revenue on new issue underwritings is donated to a charity, usually chosen by the issuer or purchaser.

In 1999 while president of the New York Women's Agenda, a coalition of over 90 women's organizations, she developed a Personal Finance Program that was introduced into the economic curriculum of New York City's public high schools. The program was designed to equip seniors with two essential financial management skills - managing a checkbook and understanding the use and abuse of credit cards. In the interest of improving the financial literacy of our nation's young people, Ms. Siebert has expanded the curriculum to include topics such as mortgages, retirement accounts, taxation, financial planning, etc. It is scheduled to be city-wide in late 2002. In keeping with her personal agenda, she hopes to see this program established nationally.

Throughout her career, Ms. Siebert has been actively involved with a wide range of non-profit, civic and women's organizations. To name only a few of her affiliations, she is currently on the boards of The New York State Business Council, the Greater New York Council of the Boy Scouts of America, and the Guild Hall Museum. She is one of five founding members of The Museum of Women-The Leadership Center, an institution in the initial planning stages to be built in Battery Park City.

Ms. Siebert was an appointee of the National Women's Business Council, a founder and former president of the The New York Women's Forum, now the International Women's Forum (of which she is also former treasurer), and was a member of the Deloitte & Touche Council for the Advancement and Retention of Women. She is a former president of the New York Women's Agenda ("NYWA"), a non-partisan coalition of 90 diverse women's organizations. NYWA provides a unified "voice for women" on all issues, policies and programs. She is a member of The Committee of 200, an international organization of pre-eminent business women. Ms. Siebert serves on the New York State Commission on Judicial Nomination which selects nominees for vacancies on the New York Court of Appeals and refers them to the Governor.

Ms. Siebert has received countless awards and honors throughout her career, including the first woman selected as "one who has made a difference" for the Working Women's Hall of Fame. In 1994, she was inducted into the International Women's Forum Hall of Fame, the National Women's Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls, NY and The Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. She was the recipient of the Sara Lee Frontrunner Award in Business, which honors the service, accomplishments, and abilities of women who represent achievement and shape the future. She was honored at Mattel/Barbie's 40th Anniversary
Gala as an "Ambassador of Dreams," representing women who have embraced the power of their dreams by becoming the very best in their chosen fields. She also received The Athena Foundation's highest award, given to those "who open the doors of leadership opportunity for women."

Her most recent honors include Town Hall Friend of the Arts Award, NAWBO First Signature Award for Lifetime Achievement as a pioneering women's business owner, the Iphigene Ochs Sulzberger Award for Contributions to Family Life from Inwood House, and the Pride of New York Award.

In November 2002, Ms. Siebert.s autobiography, .Changing the Rules -- Adventures of a Wall Street Maverick, was published by Simon and Schuster.

Ms. Castagna was named to her current position in July 2002. She was appointed Executive Vice President, President and Chief Operating Officer for JCPenney in 2001. Ms. Castagna joined JCPenney in 1999. Previously, Castagna served as Senior Vice President and General Merchandise Manager at Wal-Mart Stores, where her responsibilities included women?s and junior apparel, intimate apparel and accessories, children?s apparel, and product and brand development. From 1994 to 1996, she was Senior Vice President and General Merchandising Manager for home d?cor, domestics, furniture, crafts and children?s apparel at Wal-Mart. Prior to Wal-Mart, Castagna served in several senior level positions in the retailing industry, including Senior Vice President, General Merchandising Manager for women?s and juniors for Marshalls stores, a division of TJX Companies. From 1985 to 1992, Castagna served as Vice President, merchandising-women?s at Target stores. Castagna began her career in 1972 with Lazarus, a division of Federated Department Stores, where she rose to Senior Vice President and General Merchandising Manager.

Ms. Castagna serves on the Executive Board of the Cox School of Business at Southern Methodist University, and the boards of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and the JCPenney Afterschool Fund. She is the current chair of the Women?s Leadership Council of the United Way of Metropolitan Dallas.

She is a leading advocate for the JCPenney Afterschool Fund, which works with leading after school providers and advocates to provide children with high quality after school programs to help them reach their full potential.

Adela Cepeda, founder and president of A.C. Advisory, Inc., has been a finance specialist since 1980, structuring and executing transactions in the capital markets for corporations and municipalities. She worked for over 10 years for a major Wall Street firm as a corporate finance executive handling public and private debt and equity transactions.

Cepeda has extensive community involvement and serves on the boards of Window to the World Communications, Inc., Ravinia Festival Association, The Joffrey Ballet of Chicago and The Chicago Community Trust. She is also a board member of three New York Stock Exchange listed companies, as well as a current member of the Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA) and the Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Devra Davis, Ph.D., MPH
Environmental Scientist

 

Celebrating the newly released paperback version of her widely acclaimed book, When Smoke Ran Like Water: Tales of Deception and the Battle Against Pollution (Basic Books, 2003), which was a National Book Award Finalist, epidemiologist Devra Davis is one of the world's most visible and outspoken advocates for improving the environment to protect public health. Respected worldwide and in constant demand as a public speaker, she has often been called "today's Rachel Carson."

Dr. Davis is Visiting Professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Heinz School as well as Honorary Professor, London's School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and an Expert Advisor to the World Health Organization. President Clinton appointed Dr. Davis to the Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board, (1994-99), an independent executive branch agency that investigates, prevents, and mitigates chemical accidents.

As the former Senior Advisor to the Assistant Secretary for Health in the Department of Health and Human Services, she has counseled leading officials in the U.S., United Nations, World Health Organization and World Bank. She was also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at The Yeshiva University and Stern College for 1996-97 and Scholar in Residence and Executive Director of the Board on Environmental Studies and Toxicology at the U.S. National Research Council, of the National Academy of Science, 1983-93.

Dr. Davis holds a B.S. in physiological psychology and a M.A. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. She completed a Ph.D. in science studies at the University of Chicago, as a Danforth Foundation Graduate Fellow and a M.P.H. in epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins University, as a Senior National Cancer Institute Post-Doctoral Fellow. She has also authored more than 170 publications.

Valerie Daniels-Carter, Founder & CEO, V&J Holding Company; President & CEO of the largest African-American-owned restaurant franchise

 

Mrs. Carter, along with her brother John started V & J Foods with a single Burger King restaurant in 1984. In nineteen years, she has nurtured the company into a 126-unit, multi-brand operation. Mrs. Carter adopts a hands-on approach to restaurant operations. She focuses on the performance of each and every unit so that all are achieving positive results. Her operating philosophy is ?YATSE?: You Are The Standard of Excellence. Mrs. Carter laid the foundation for her successful entrepreneurial career at Lincoln University where she received her BA. She later earned an MBA from Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee.

She began her career with First Wisconsin National Bank (now US Bank) as a retail and commercial lender. She later accepted a position as an auditor for MGIC Investment Corporation in the financial underwriting division. Gail Evans is the best-selling author of Play Like A Man Win Like A Woman, an informative business guide to the secrets men know about success that women need to learn. The book was listed for several months on the New York Times, Business Week, and Wall Street Journal?s bestseller lists. Play Like A Man, Win Like A Woman has been translated into 18 languages and has been a bestseller around the world. She has appeared in recent years on outlets such as, NBC?s ?The Today Show?, USA Today, ?Larry King Live?, and the New York Times to name a few. Her latest book, She Wins, You Win, was published in May of 2003.

Evans? career is vast, beginning in government and culminating as the Executive Vice President of CNN. Evans began working with CNN at its inception in 1980 and was promoted to Executive Vice President for CNN in 1996. In September 2000, Evans was named to Executive Vice President of Domestic Networks for the CNN Newsgroup. She was responsible for program and talent development of all domestic networks overseeing national and international talk shows and the Network Guest Bookings Department, which schedules about 25,000 guests each year. She served as a member of the CNN Executive Committee and was chairperson of the CNN programming task force. Evans retired from CNN in the summer of 2001.

Evans is active in numerous charities and served for two years as the chairperson of the Georgia Endowment for the Humanities. In 1979, she was nominated to Leadership Atlanta and in 1993, she became a trustee of the Radio and Television News Directors Foundation. In 1997, Evans was appointed by President Clinton to the Commission on White House Fellows.

She is a member of the Board of Trustees at Kennesaw State University and has served as an adjunct professor at Emory University?s Goizueta School of Business, teaching a course on gender issues in the workplace. Additionally Evans is a member of the board of the Society for Women?s Health Research, the Breman Jewish Heritage Museum, and the Atlanta Girls School. Evans also has been elected to membership of the Committee 200 and The International Women?s Forum and the Council on Foreign Relations. Sylvia Hatchell, Head Coach of Women's Basketball from University of North Carolina. She is one of the top woman' s basketball coach in collegiate sports.

 

Sylvia Hatchell accepted the job of her dreams in 1986 and since then has posted a record of 358-175 in 17 seasons as the women?s basketball coach at the University of North Carolina. With a career record of 630-255 in 28 seasons as a head coach, she ranks sixth in total wins among active Division I women?s basketball coaches. She is one of just eight coaches with more than 600 career victories.

A North Carolina native who grew up a Tar Heel fan, Hatchell has led Carolina to an NCAA Championship (1994) and four Atlantic Coast Conference crowns (1994, ?95, ?97and ?98). In 1994, USA Today and College Sports magazine named her the National Coach of the Year. In 1997, she was named ACC Coach of the Year after guiding the Tar Heels to a 15-1 conference record and their first regular-season ACC title.

Hatchell has led the Tar Heels to 11 NCAA Tournament appearances, 10 of them over the past 12 years. Carolina finished the 2002-03 season with a record of 28-6, reaching the 25-wins mark for the seventh time in the past 10 years. Including 2003, UNC has played in the ACC Tournament championship game eight times in the past 10 years.

Prior to taking over the Tar Heel program, Hatchell coached Francis Marion to a 272-80 mark over 11 seasons. She led the 1986 Lady Patriots to a remarkable 36-2 record and a NAIA national championship. Her 1982 team also won a national championship, in the AIAW small college division. She is the only women's basketball coach to lead teams to national championships on the AIAW, NAIA and NCAA Division I levels.

Hatchell also has extensive international coaching experience. In August 1995, she led the U.S. to a silver medal at the World University Games in Fukuoka, Japan. During the summer of 1994, she directed the United States team to the gold medal in the R. William Jones Cup. She has been the assistant coach for five gold-medal-winning teams, including the 1988 Olympic team. She was a court coach at the U.S. Olympic basketball tryouts in both 1984 and '92 and also worked on the Olympic Games basketball events staff in Los Angeles in 1984.

Hatchell is actively involved in shaping modern women's basketball and served as president of the Women's Basketball Coaches Association during the 1996-97 academic year.

Elouise C. Cobell, Founder of the First Native-American-Owned National Bank

 

Ms. Cobell is the Executive Director of the Native American Community Development Corporation a non profits affiliate of Native American Bank. She also served as Chairperson for the Blackfeet National Bank, the first national bank located on an Indian reservation and owned by a Native American tribe. Ms. Cobell was one of its lead organizers of the bank and was instrumental in the formation of the Blackfeet Reservation Development Fund, Inc. Her work on the Individual Indian Monies Trust Correction and Recovery Project has won admiration by many. This is a project to reform the U.S. Government on the management of Individual Indian Trust Assets. Ms. Cobell is a recipient of the 1997 ?Genius Grant? from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation?s Fellowship Program.

Ms. Cobell?s professional, civic experience and expertise includes serving as a Board Member for the Tides Foundation, the Northwest Area Foundation, First Interstate Bank, the Montana Community Foundation, a Trustee of the National Museum of the American Indian, as well as a member of other boards. Ms. Cobell served for thirteen years as the Treasurer for the Blackfeet Indian Nation in Montana.

In addition to operating a working ranch with her husband, which produces cattle and crops, she is active in local agriculture and environmental issues, founding the first Land Trust in Indian Country and servers as a Trustee for the Nature Conservancy of Montana.

Elouise Cobell is a graduate of Great Falls Business College and attended Montana State University where she recently received an Honorary Doctorate Degree; her professional background is in accounting and community development. Ms. Cobell received the 2002 International Women?s Forum award for ?Women Who Make a Difference? in Mexico City. She is a member of the Blackfeet Indian Tribe of Montana.

She was chosen by the Women's Advertising Club of Chicago as the 2002 "Advertising Woman of the Year? and was named a ?Media Maven? by Advertising Age in 2001. She has also received such honors as Business Week 's Media Strategies Award; the Chicago Magazine Association's Vanguard Award; Ebony 's Outstanding Women in Communications Award; and Essence magazine named her one of ?50 Women Who Are Changing The World? in 2003.

She currently serves as chair of the American Association of Advertising Agencies? Media Policy Committee, and sits on the board of the Audit Bureau of Circulations and the Advisory Board of the Media Management Center at Northwestern University. She is a member of the American Advertising Federation?s Multicultural Business Practices Leadership Council and is on the board of Chicago United, a metropolitan coalition of business leaders focused on increasing capital and educational opportunities for diverse communities.

McCann first joined the agency, which was then part of Leo Burnett, in 1978 as a client service trainee. She was named a vice president in 1988 and, in early 1989, became a media director. She was elected a senior vice president in 1995 and has served as chief executive of Starcom North America since 1999.

McCann earned a Bachelor of Science degree in speech from Northwestern University. She and her husband live in Chicago with their two children.

Lesley Visser, Sports Journalism Pioneer
First Female Analyst to Cover NFL Football

 

Lesley Visser, a pioneer among women sports journalists, returned to CBS Sports in August 2000 as a contributor to THE NFL TODAY, college basketball and the U.S. Open Tennis Championships, as well as for special projects with CBS Sports and CBS News. This season marks her 30th covering the NFL.

She was a contributor to the CBS Television Network's coverage of Super Bowl XXXV in January 2001. She also serves as a reporter for HBO Sports' "Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel."

During the 2001 NFL season Visser marked another first in sports broadcasting becoming the first woman to be an analyst for NFL broadcasts when she returned to covering ?Monday Night Football? as an analyst for Westwood One/CBS Radio Sports along with Howard David and Boomer Esiason for selected games.

Visser returned to CBS Sports after nearly seven years with ABC Sports, the last two as the sideline reporter for "Monday Night Football." She was the first woman assigned to the series and the first female sideline reporter for the Super Bowl. While at ABC Sports, Visser was a reporter for college football bowl games and NFL playoff games. She also contributed to the network's coverage of Triple Crown horse racing, "ABC's Wide World of Sports," Major League Baseball (including the World Series) figure skating, the Special Olympics, skiing and the Pro Bowl. Among her additional credits are the ABC series "A Passion To Play" and the "Millennium Tournament of Roses Parade," which she hosted. She also covered the NCAA basketball Final Four and the Super Bowl for ESPN.

Visser first worked at CBS in 1984 and became full time in 1987 with assignments including "The NBA on CBS," college basketball, Major League Baseball, college football, the U.S. Open Tennis Championships and the Olympic Winter Games. In addition, she was a regular on THE NFL TODAY pre-game show. In 1992, she became the first woman to cover the post-game presentation ceremony at the Super Bowl. In 1989, she covered the fall of the Berlin Wall, focusing on how sports would change in East Germany.

She began her career in sports journalism in 1974 as a member of the Boston Globe sports staff on a grant from the prestigious Carnegie Foundation. Two years later, she was assigned to cover the New England Patriots, becoming the first female NFL beat writer. While at the Boston Globe, she covered the NCAA Final Four, Super Bowl, NBA Finals, World Series, Wimbledon, the Olympics and college football.

Visser was voted the Outstanding Women's Sportswriter in America in 1983 and won the Women's Sports Foundation Award for Journalism in 1992. In 1999, she won the first AWSM Pioneer Award.

Visser earned a bachelor's degree in English at Boston College. She is married to Fox/Turner sportscaster Dick Stockton and lives in Boca Raton, Fla. Her birth date is Sept. 11

Peggy Cherng Ph.D., Executive Director, LA World Airports, manages one of the world?s largest airport systems

 

Peggy Tsiang Cherng, Ph.D., president and CEO of Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. (PRG) is one of the few female presidents in the competitive restaurant industry. With her diverse educational background and business savvy, Cherng continues to play an instrumental role in the increasing success of the Rosemead, California-based company while establishing PRG as the largest Chinese foodservice provider in the nation.

In 1998, Cherng became president of PRG and she leads strategic planning, developing and coordinating departmental goals and implementing a variety of training programs. Through her leadership, PRG has gained a large share of the quick service market with its Panda Express concept. There are currently more than 550 Panda Express locations throughout 35 states, Puerto Rico and Japan.

Burmese born, Cherng and her family later moved to Hong Kong where she resided until leaving for Baker University in Kansas to pursue her undergraduate studies. During this time, Peggy met Andrew J.C. Cherng, a man who would later become her lifelong partner, both in marriage and business.

Following graduation, Cherng joined McDonnell Douglas as a member of the technical team. Later Cherng worked at Comtal-3M, where her highly technical background quickly led her up the corporate ladder to become software development manager. During this time her husband and father-in-law, Master Chef Ming Tsai Cherng, opened Panda Inn in Pasadena, California, a unique restaurant featuring gourmet Mandarin and Szechuan cuisine.

The Panda business steadily grew, and in 1982, Cherng decided to join the family business. As executive vice president she created the vision, mission and value statements for PRG helping to set a solid corporate foundation for further growth.

Cherng is active in a variety of professional organizations including the National Restaurant Association, the Executive Committee and the American Compensation Association. She serves as a member of the board of visitors for the Peter F. Drucker Graduate School of Management at Claremont Graduate University and is a member of the board of directors for the Los Angeles United Way chapter and Childrens Hospital.

During 1999, Cherng received the Asian American Entrepreneur award from Minorities in Business Magazine and was inducted into the Los Angeles Chapter of the National Association of Women Business Owners? Millennium Hall of Fame. Cherng?s other honors include receiving a prestigious Golden Chain award from Nation?s Restaurant News and the ?Spirit of Life? award from the City of Hope in 2000. In 2001 she was inducted into the Los Angeles Business Journal ? Minority and Women Owned Businesses Hall of Fame and was the Honoree of the Year of the National Association of Women Business Owners in 2002.

Lydia Kennard, Executive Director, LA World Airports, manages one of the world?s largest airport systems

 

Lydia H. Kennard was appointed Executive Director of Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) in March 2000, after acting as Interim Executive Director since August 1999. Kennard is the highest-ranking woman General Manager in the history of the City of Los Angeles. She is also one of the highest ranking women in aviation management in the world, running the second largest system of airports. LAWA airports include Los Angeles International, Ontario International, Van Nuys and Palmdale Regional.

Kennard joined LAWA in 1994 as Deputy Executive Director for Design and Construction. In that capacity, she managed an annual capital improvement budget of over $600 million and oversaw the activities relating to planning, design, engineering, construction, real estate and facilities at LAWA?s four aviation facilities. She also administered a $100 million budget for soundproofing and a multi-million dollar real estate acquisition program.

Lydia Kennard has a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford, a Masters from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a law degree from Harvard. Before joining LAWA, she was President of KDG Development Construction Consulting, a Los Angeles-based firm specializing in land-use planning, development, programming and construction management for public and private sector clients.

Kennard also serves on the UniHealth Foundation Board and has been a member of the California Medical Center Foundation Board and the Equal Opportunity Advisory Council for Southern California Edison. She was named 1995 Woman of the Year by the Los Angeles Chapter of the Women?s Transportation Seminar. Additionally, in 2000, the National Association of Women Business Owners-Los Angeles named her the Civic Leader of the Year. In 2001, she received the Los Angeles Urban League Rising Star Award. In 2002, Kennard was named Distinguished Honoree by Allstate Insurance Co. She also was honored with the Transportation and Real Estate Hero Award by the March of Dimes, and the Public Service Award by the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce.

Mavis Leno, Advocate for Afghan Women

 

Mavis Nicholson Leno is the Chair of the Feminist Majority Foundation?s Campaign to Help Afghan Women and Girls, and has been the United States? most outspoken critic of the Taliban?s horrific treatment of women. Leno joined the Board of Directors of the Feminist Majority Foundation in 1997, after playing an active role in the effort to defeat Proposition 209, the anti-affirmative action initiative on the 1996 California ballot.

Leno assumed her role as Chair of the Campaign to Stop Gender Apartheid in Afghanistan in 1997, less than one year after the Taliban?s brutal treatment of women began. She testified on gender apartheid in March 1998 before Senator Diane Feinstein of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, and has consistently urged the Clinton and Bush Administrations as well as the U.S. Congress to do more to restore women?s human rights in Afghanistan. Her involvement in the Feminist Majority?s Campaign was also instrumental in defeating the energy company UNOCAL?s efforts to construct an oil pipeline across Afghanistan that would have supplied the Taliban with over $100 million and dramatically increased their control in the region.

She is currently a leader in the effort to make the restoration of women?s rights a nonnegotiable element of a post-Taliban Afghanistan, and has been at the forefront of insuring that the plight of Afghan women is included in the world?s reporting of the war in Afghanistan. Recent television appearances include Larry King Live, The Today Show, CNN with Paula Zahn, Hardball with Chris Mathews, MSNBC Nightly News and the Tonight Show. Mavis has also been featured in articles in TIME, Newsweek, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Post, Vanity Fair, US magazine and People magazine.

Dr. Kathy Magliato, Heart Transplant Surgeon, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center

 

Kathy Elizabeth Magliato, M.D. is giving patients with a failing heart a new lease on life. She is Staff Surgeon in Cardiothoracic Surgery, Heart/Lung Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Devices at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, and Staff Surgeon, Cardiothoracic Surgery at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City.

Dr. Magliato is one of only a few dozen women to perform cardiac surgery. She is one of only a handful who does heart transplants. Most remarkably, she is a leading expert at the forefront of heart failure cardiology and heart failure surgery in the pioneering field of ventricular assist device implantation. These mechanisms provide a ?bridge to transplant? for a failing heart, bringing new hope as well as enhanced portability for patients who otherwise might not survive the wait for a suitable donor.

A native of upstate New York, Dr. Magliato came to Cedars-Sinai from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, where she specialized in heart transplantation, lung transplantation and ventricular assist devices. She received her MD with Alpha Omega Alpha honors from Cleveland?s Case Western Reserve University, and completed internship and residencies at Akron General Medical Center and Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois.

During her career, Dr. Magliato has received numerous honors and awards including the Milton B. Schweid Memorial Award for Excellence in Cardiovascular Diseases. She has an extensive research background and her work has been published in a variety of scientific journals. A respected and sought-after lecturer, she is frequently asked to present findings at medical conferences on ventricular assist devices and other topics. Dr. Magliato takes special interest in women?s health, and many of her numerous media appearances have focused on women?s health issues.

Donna de Varona, Olympian, first woman network sportscaster, advocate for girls/women's sports and Title IX.

 


At 13 years old, Donna de Varona had a knack for breaking barriers and overcoming obstacles. Barely a teenager, she became the youngest competitor at the 1960 Olympic Games. Just four years later she broke an unprecedented 18 world swimming records and won two Olympic Gold Medals. By age 17, she was voted Most Outstanding Female Athlete in the world by both the Associated Press (AP) and the United Press International (UPI).

De Varona retired from competitive sports in 1965. However, this U S Olympic Hall of Famer decided to use her broad range of skills to pursue other things while continuing to open doors and meet challenges with the strength and stamina that she gained as an Olympic swimmer. In 1965 de Varona became the first female sports broadcaster on network television and in so doing paved the way for future female athletes and journalists.

As an ABC Sports on-air analyst, commentator, host, writer and producer she earned an Emmy Award nomination for ?Keepers of the Flame? a TV special and received an Emmy for her story about a Special Olympian. She also won the Gracie Award two consecutive years for her Sporting News Radio show: ?Donna de Varona on Sports?.

Ms de Varona is a founding member of the Women?s Sports Foundation and first president, she served four terms on the President?s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, and was a moving force in Congress? passage of the 1978 Amateur Sports Act and the landmark ?Title IX? legislation.

Shirley L. Gross-Moore, She turned a failing car dealership into 5-star dealer with 2 locations

 

When Shirley L. Gross-Moore moved into the driver's seat at Barrington Dodge in November 1988, some people said she would last only six months; others didn't give her that long. Now, over 15 years later, Barrington Dodge in suburban Chicago has not only survived, it has thrived. Moore has expanded to a second location nearby, and Barrington Dodge is now a Five-Star dealer, the highest ranking possible from the manufacturer.

Moving from low expectations to the highest standard of excellence in the male-dominated world of automobiles has been gratifying for Moore. "It's quite a feeling of accomplishment knowing that you've done this in a predominantly male world," says Moore. "I don't see why any woman can't do this; all it takes is some hard work and common business sense."

A native of Detroit, Moore worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 11 years. It was through this experience at the IRS that Moore first thought of the idea of business ownership. In 1986 while she worked as the public affairs director at a Detroit television station, a fellow student in a graduate class at Central Michigan University suggested that she look into the dealer development programs offered by the Big Three automakers.

Through the program she was trained in all aspects of the operation, including the "dirty work." Moore arrived at Barrington Dodge as the general manager in November 1988 and served in that capacity for two years. She purchased the dealership in 1995. What was at first a struggling business in one building with a staff of 21 that sold an average of 45 cars per month expanded into two locations, 50 employees and an average of 145 cars sold per month. The company had an estimated $ 63 million in sales for 2001.

Kay Koplovitz is the founder of USA Networks and the first woman network president in television history. A pioneer in cable television networks and new media ventures, she is a visionary woman who led the emergence of cable television from the backcountry of America to challenge the broadcast networks for coveted audiences. Val Ackerman is the President of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). The League is owned by the 29 member teams of the National Basketball Association and includes 16 teams located in Charlotte, Cleveland, Detroit, Houston, Indiana, Miami, Los Angeles, Minnesota, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, Portland, Sacramento, Seattle Utah and Washington.

Ackerman joined the NBA in 1988 as a staff attorney and served as Special Assistant to Commissioner David Stern from 1990 to 1992. She was named Director of Business Affairs in 1992 and Vice President of Business Affairs in 1994.

As a member of the Board of Directors of USA Basketball, Ackerman helped create the 1995-96 USA Basketball Women's National Team program, which culminated with a gold medal performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.

Ackerman currently serves on the USA Basketball Executive Committee and is a member of the Board of Trustees for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Ackerman graduated from the University of Virginia in 1981, where she was a four-year starter for the women's basketball team and a two-time Academic All-American. She played one season of professional basketball in France before attending UCLA School of Law, from which she received her law degree in 1985.

Following graduation, she worked as an associate at the New York law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett. She and her husband, Charlie Rappaport, have two daughters, Emily and Sally.

Colleen Barrett, COO & President, Southwest Airlines

 

Colleen C. Barrett is currently President, Chief Operating Officer, and Corporate Secretary for Southwest Airlines Co., a high-frequency, low-fare, point-to-point airline which prides itself in its excellent Customer Service qualities.

In that capacity, she oversees management, leadership, and budget responsibilities over the following areas/groups: each of the Company?s three Executive Vice Presidents and their respective areas (operations; customer service; corporate services; human resources; training; etc.); the Senior Vice President Marketing; the Vice President-General Counsel; the Vice President-Internal Audit and Special Projects; the Vice President-Corporate Communications; and the Executive Office staff. She is a member of the Company?s Board of Directors, as well as a member of the Company?s Executive Planning Committee, and she chairs numerous special teams, task forces, and committees relating to internal and external Southwest Customers.

Prior to joining Southwest (in 1978), she worked for several years as an Executive Assistant to Herb Kelleher (Southwest?s current Chairman) at his law firm.

For Southwest Airlines, she has served as Secretary of the Corporation since March 1978; and served as Vice President Administration from 1986 to 1990 and Executive Vice President Customers from 1990 to 2001.

Colleen is divorced; has one son and one grandson; is active in numerous civic and charitable organizations in Dallas, Texas; is active in various state political campaigns; and has served on numerous boards and commissions. She graduated with highest honors from Becker Junior College in Worcester, Massachusetts in 1964.

Deborah Rosado Shaw, founder and CEO of Umbrellas Plus

 

Born in Spanish Harlem and raised in the nations poorest congressional district, Deborah's strategies for success have gotten her from tough inner-city beginnings to award-winning entrepreneur and advisor to Fortune 500 CEO's.

She is the founder of Dream Big! Enterprises and Umbrellas Plus, a multi-million dollar wholesaler and importer of fashion and sun accessories. Umbrellas Plus has delivered successful projects to accounts that include Costco, Kraft General Foods, M&M Mars and Toys-R-Us. Today her merchandise can be found in 2,100 Wal-Mart stores.

An international speaker, Deborah advises the top executives of several Fortune 500 retail and consumer products companies on issues ranging from marketing to diversity. She serves on several non-profit advisory boards including the Friito-Lay Hispanic Latino Advisory Board and the Office Depot Women?s Council and was twice-appointed a Commissioner with the New Jersey ?Commission on the Status of Women?.

Deborah?s strategies for success have been featured in Business Week, Family Circle, Forbes, "O" The Oprah Magazine, USA Today and many others. She is a frequent television and radio guest and has appeared on ABC, CNN, FOX and NBC affiliates nationwide. In addition, her achievements have been used as case studies in several textbooks.

In 2001, Deborah became the first Latina author of a self-help book to get published by a major publisher. In 2002, Simon & Schuster added a Spanish language version of her critically acclaimed book, Dream BIG!, entitled Sonar en Grande!

Deborah has been recognized with numerous awards including the Small Business Administration and Avon ?Women of Enterprise Awards,? the ?Free Enterprise Legend Award?, Hispanic Magazine?s ?Entrepreneur of the Year Award?, the Dialogue on Diversity ?Entrepreneurial Excellence Award, the "Madam C.J.Walker Award" and the National Foundation for Women Legislators ?Entrepreneur of the Year Award?. Her most recent honor was being named ?Hispanic Business Woman of the Year? by the National Hispanic Business Group.

Deborah is a graduate of Barnard College and lives in New Jersey with her three teenage sons.
